Chapter 7

Camille stood frozen in the warm golden light, her chest heaving as the sheer magnitude of her failure crashed over her. She looked at the heavy diamond engagement ring on her left hand. With a sudden, violent motion, she wrenched the ring off her finger and threw it onto the polished marble floor. It landed with a sharp, echoing clatter, rolling to a stop near one of the velvet dining chairs.
"You will regret this," Camille hissed, her rosy face contorted with rage. "When the western families pull their support, you will remember tonight."
"Will I remember tonight with anything other than profound relief?" Malcolm asked, entirely unfazed by her threat. He did not even glance at the discarded diamond.
He raised his hand, gesturing sharply to the two bodyguards waiting by the doors. "Will you escort Miss Sterling to her suite to pack, and then see her off the property?"
The guards moved instantly, flanking Camille with cold, professional efficiency. She did not fight them. She shot one last, venomous glare at Iris, who was still standing quietly by the fireplace, before turning and storming out of the dining hall, the heavy mahogany doors shutting solidly behind her.
The grand room was suddenly very quiet. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their luminous, elegant warmth over the abandoned white damask tables and crystal stemware. The air felt lighter, as if a toxic gas had finally been vented from the mansion.
Malcolm turned his broad shoulders, his dark three-piece suit shifting impeccably. He looked down at Lucy. The six-year-old girl was still clutching the edge of the marble mantelpiece, staring up at her father with wide, awe-struck eyes.
"Are you ready for bed, little bird?" Malcolm asked, his deep voice dropping into a register of incredibly tender, paternal warmth.
Lucy nodded slowly. "Are you mad at me, Daddy?"
"Could I ever be mad at you for defending your mother?" Malcolm asked, dropping to one knee so he was at eye level with the child. He reached out and gently brushed a stray curl from her fair forehead. "Did you show more bravery tonight than half the men in my syndicate?"
Lucy offered a small, hesitant smile, the fear finally bleeding out of her posture. She threw her small arms around his thick neck, burying her face into his tailored shoulder. Malcolm closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, holding her tightly, the artistic tattoos on his hands stark against the delicate fabric of her party dress.
He stood up, lifting the child effortlessly into his arms. He turned his cold, perceptive eyes toward the beautiful housemaid who had risked everything to protect them both.

"Will you accompany us upstairs, Iris?" Malcolm asked quietly.
Iris’s expressive brows lifted slightly in surprise, but she quickly smoothed her apron. "Of course, Mr. Thorne."
