Chapter 4

The memory came in fragments.
A dark table.
My knees against hardwood.
Bread smell above me.
Someone saying:
“If you’re hungry enough, you’ll behave.”
I had not thought about it in thirty years.
Maybe longer.
I stared at Vivian.
“You did this to me.”
Caroline’s face went white.
“No.”
My mother did not answer.
That was enough.
I leaned back.
“How old?”
Vivian sighed.
“Roman.”
“How old?”
“Five.”
My stomach turned.
Five.
Then six.
Sometimes seven.
Not every dinner.
Only when I was “difficult.”
Same word.
Caroline stared at our mother.
“You told me he chose to eat under the table.”
Vivian looked irritated.
“You were a child.”
“So was he.”
There.
First crack.
I looked at Caroline.
“What do you remember?”
She swallowed.
“Mom gave me dessert.”
Of course.
Contrast.
Again.
“When?”
“When you didn’t get dinner.”
Her eyes filled.
“I thought it meant I was good.”
Vivian leaned back.
“It did.”
Caroline looked at her mother like something inside the room had changed shape.
“You made me eat in front of him.”
“Yes.”
“To teach him.”
“Yes.”
“And now you made Sophia eat in front of Milo.”
Vivian’s face remained calm.
“Because it works.”
That sentence changed the temperature.
Not regret.
Continuation.
She truly believed survival proved success.
I looked at my mother.
“You think I became boss because you humiliated me.”
“I think you learned hunger does not control a strong man.”
“No.”
My voice stayed low.
“I learned to hide hunger from you.”
Silence.
I remembered now.
Stealing bread at night.
Drinking water before dinner so my stomach hurt less.
Lying that I was not hungry because asking gave Vivian leverage.
I had called those memories discipline.
Then stopped remembering them at all.
My mother smiled faintly.
“And yet you survived.”
There it was.
The oldest defense.
Survival as approval.
I looked toward the hallway where Milo waited with my bodyguard.
“He will not have to survive his childhood.”
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“You think love prepares him for your chair?”
I went still.
My chair.
Finally.
Not dinner behavior.
Not picky eating.
Succession.

She had not been disciplining my son as a grandmother.
She had been training the future boss without my permission.
