Chapter 15

Matteo returned to council with a question.

Not a challenge.

“Do you still intend to leave Milo outside succession discussions?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“As long as possible.”

He sighed.

“Roman.”

I waited.

He corrected his tone.

“Boss.”

“Worse.”

He almost smiled.

Progress.

“What happens if something happens to you?”

Fair.

A real organizational question.

Not an excuse to shape a toddler.

We discussed adult successors.

Capos.

Interim structures.

People already capable of understanding what responsibility meant.

For the first time in years, the family planned continuity without using a child’s name.

That mattered.

Gianni hated it.

“Blood should matter.”

“It does.”

I looked at him.

“It creates relationship.”

Pause.

“Not competence.”

Silence.

My father would have hated that sentence.

Vivian too.

Maybe once I would have.

Caroline attended part of the meeting as an observer.

Not because I was promoting her.

Because she had spent years near household operations and understood the internal alliances better than most men pretending she did not.

Interesting.

Old hierarchy had hidden useful people too.

Afterward she asked:

“You trust me again?”

“No.”

She flinched.

Then I continued.

“I trust you more than three months ago.”

That was enough.

Not full restoration.

Not permanent condemnation.

Specific.

She nodded.

“Fair.”

At dinner that night, Sophia dropped a fork.

Everyone looked up.

Old habits.

She froze.

Then Caroline handed her another.

No lecture.

No meaning.

Milo laughed because the fork bounced.

Sophia laughed too.

The room relaxed.

Small things expose whether a system actually changed.

Not speeches.

Forks.

Bread.

Where a child sits.

Whether a mistake becomes humiliation.

That night, nobody went under the table unless they were looking for the fork.
