Chapter 16

Vivian returned to a family dinner for the first time after nine months.

Milo approved it.

On one condition.

“Grandma sits far.”

Fair.

She sat at the opposite end.

No head position.

No matriarch performance.

Just a woman invited by a child she hurt.

Dinner began.

Steak.

Potatoes.

Vegetables.

Milo stared at the steak.

Then at me.

“Cut?”

I cut it.

Vivian watched.

Once she would have called that indulgence.

She said nothing.

Good.

Sophia asked for ketchup.

Caroline nearly laughed.

Vivian visibly disliked it.

Still said nothing.

Better.

Then Milo pushed away the vegetables.

Everyone froze internally.

I could feel it.

Vivian too.

This was the old trigger.

Picky.

Difficult.

Needs correction.

Milo looked at me.

“I don’t want green.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Vivian inhaled.

I looked at her.

She closed her mouth.

Good.

A minute later Milo ate one piece anyway.

Not because someone threatened food.

Because Sophia dared him.

Children.

Normal.

After dinner, Vivian approached me.

“You let him refuse dinner.”

“No.”

I looked at the empty steak section of his plate.

“I let him refuse broccoli.”

She frowned.

“He needs boundaries.”

“He has them.”

“Where?”

I almost smiled.

“Bedtime.”

Pause.

“No hitting.”

Another.

“No running into council.”

Another.

“He says please when asking staff for things.”

She stared.

“Those are not consequences.”

“No.”

“They’re boundaries.”

Different.

Maybe for the first time she heard it.

Discipline did not require fear.

Structure did not require degradation.

A child could be guided without being broken.

Vivian looked toward Milo.

He was feeding one small piece of steak to the family dog under Ellen’s supervision.

She almost objected.

May you like

Then stopped.

Progress sometimes looks like an old woman swallowing one sentence.
