Chapter 14

Blackwood changed slowly.

I did not sell it.

That would make it another dramatic gesture.

We reopened it as a family retreat.

No training schedules.

No correction rooms.

No child sent there alone.

The long dining table remained.

I almost replaced it.

Then decided against it.

Objects are not guilty.

People give them meaning.

The first weekend, I brought Milo and Sophia.

Caroline came later.

Vivian did not.

Her choice.

Milo ran through the hallways.

No idea what the house had been.

Good.

He found my initials beneath the table.

“R.V.”

I froze.

“What that?”

“Mine.”

He laughed.

“You draw table.”

“Apparently.”

“Bad.”

“Probably.”

Sophia crawled under to inspect.

Then Milo joined her.

My body tightened automatically.

Two children under a table.

Same posture.

Different reason.

They were hiding during a game.

Laughing.

No bowl.

No hunger.

No adult feet controlling them.

I stayed where I was.

Caroline noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Not completely.”

Honest.

She nodded.

We did not drag the children out because the image made us uncomfortable.

That would make our memories their rule.

Five minutes later they crawled back out demanding sandwiches.

We gave them sandwiches.

At the table.

Then on the floor because they wanted a picnic.

Again, choice changes meaning.

I looked at the scratches beneath the table one last time.

I had spent years thinking healing meant erasing evidence that something happened.

May you like

Maybe not.

Maybe it meant being able to stand in the same room while something entirely different happened next.
