Chapter 5

The terrified whisper hung in the air between them, a devastating bomb dropped into the absolute silence of the memorial garden. Amelie’s words, spoken with such raw, trembling certainty, shattered the fragile reality Anselm had maintained regarding the political alliance with the senator's family.

Anselm slowly turned his head. The movement was agonizingly deliberate, the sharp lines of his jaw setting into a mask of pure, unadulterated vengeance. He looked away from Amelie and stared directly at the polished marble headstone he had just honored with white daisies. He stared at the pristine, manicured grass covering the earth. It was empty. A hollow monument maintained to mock his grief, a secret leverage held over him by the woman he was supposed to marry.

Every mourner in the crowd turned toward him. The forty relatives, capos, and estate staff sensed the catastrophic shift in the atmosphere. They watched the mafia boss, realizing that the political marriage that was supposed to secure their future was currently disintegrating into a bloody war. The bright, cinematic sunlight suddenly felt harsh and unforgiving.

Anselm finally turned his dark, unforgiving gaze back to Amelie. He did not yell. His deep, measured voice was low and controlled, but it vibrated with a lethal, apocalyptic calm that resonated in the bones of every person present.

"Amelie… who helped her move my mother?" Anselm asked, his voice steady despite the rage boiling beneath the surface.

It was a question that demanded a name, a target for the fury building in his broad shoulders. It was a command that would ignite a war between the syndicate and the state senate.

Across the damp grass, Tallulah heard the terrifyingly quiet question. The words carried just far enough to reach her ears over the soft afternoon breeze.

She stopped brushing the dirt and crushed white petals from her ruined ivory coat. She froze, her hands hovering mid-air, the color completely draining from her fair, aristocratic face. The secret she had buried, the ultimate leverage she had orchestrated to ensure Anselm's absolute obedience, had just been exposed by a lowly housemaid.

The air in the cemetery turned freezing cold despite the bright sun. The climax of the afternoon had arrived, and there was no turning back. The fragile peace was broken permanently.

Amelie gently straightened the bent arm of his glasses one last time, refusing to step away from him. She stayed intimately close beside his towering frame as the entire memorial fell into a heavy, ringing silence. She looked over her shoulder, her expressive eyes locking onto the two massive bodyguards flanking Tallulah, before she turned back to Anselm.

"Her private detail, sir," Amelie answered, her American accent gaining a sliver of desperate strength as she stood safely in his protective shadow. "The two men standing behind her right now. I saw them carrying the heavy, unmarked crates out of the garden three nights ago when you were in the city."

The implication was horrific. The very men who were sworn to protect the senator's daughter had acted as common grave robbers on her command, desecrating the sacred resting place of the syndicate's matriarch right under their noses.
