Chapter 3

The tension in the bright, luminous air of the private cemetery was so thick it felt tangible. The forty guests held their collective breath, watching the political alliance of the Whitcroft syndicate violently clash with the arrogance of the state senate.
Amelie Greaves did not wait for the bodyguards to react, nor did she wait for Anselm to recover his balance against the headstone. She dropped her gentle demeanor entirely. She gripped the heavy metal handle of the groundskeeping trolley with both her small, delicate hands. She planted one flat shoe firmly behind her in the damp grass, anchoring her weight, preparing to defend the man she loved.
With every ounce of desperate, protective strength she possessed, Amelie drove the heavy trolley forward in ONE forceful, devastating push.
The heavy metal cart rolled rapidly over the grass, its wheels digging slightly into the earth. The solid front rail of the trolley caught Tallulah Sutherland squarely across the hips with a loud, sickening thud.
The impact was sharp, brutal, and entirely unexpected. Tallulah let out a loud, high-pitched gasp, the sudden force instantly breaking her vicious grip on Anselm’s tailored lapel. She stumbled violently backward, her expensive heels sinking into the soft earth as she lost her balance entirely. She careened backward, her arms flailing wildly, and crashed heavily into a lightweight memorial-photo easel that stood nearby.
The delicate metal frame folded instantly under her weight, collapsing with a loud clatter. Ribboned bouquets of white lilies and roses tumbled onto the grass, crushing beneath her as she sprawled awkwardly over the ruined memorial display. Her pristine ivory designer coat was instantly smeared with dirt and crushed petals, her carefully constructed image of invincibility completely shattered by a single, forceful strike from a housemaid.
Both bodyguards reacted instantly. They lunged forward, their hands flying to their holstered weapons as they reached toward their fallen employer. They glared at Amelie, ready to tear her apart for assaulting a senator's daughter in broad daylight.
But a sudden, terrifying shift in the atmosphere stopped them dead in their tracks.
The nearby guests, who had been quietly shifting on their feet in anticipation of Anselm's retaliation, stopped moving entirely. The silence that fell over the cemetery garden was absolute, heavy, and apocalyptic. No one spoke. The entire gathering held its breath, staring at the beautiful, gentle maid who had just physically assaulted the untouchable fiancée.

Amelie stood frozen, her chest heaving, her hands still hovering in the air where she had released the trolley handle. The reality of what she had just done crashed down upon her. She had just signed her own death warrant in front of forty witnesses.
Anselm pushed himself away from the marble headstone, pulling himself up to his full, towering height. He did not look at the woman sprawling in the dirt, nor did he look at the armed guards preparing to execute his maid. He looked only at Amelie. The momentary vulnerability was gone, replaced entirely by the cold, calculating apex predator that ruled the city. He recognized the profound, terrifying loyalty that had just been displayed, and his dark eyes burned with an unspoken promise of protection.
