Chapter 10

The sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the estate into an artificial dusk lit by harsh security floods. The cinematic warmth was gone, replaced by the stark, terrifying reality of an impending siege. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing minute, echoing off the stone walls of the mansion.

Inside the fortified grand foyer, Anselm Valegrove shed his heavy black overcoat, handing it to an enforcer. He rolled up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt, revealing the intricate tattoos snaking up his forearms. He drew a heavy, suppressed pistol, checking the chamber with a sharp, metallic click. His sharp jawline was set in absolute resolve.

Amelie stood by the sweeping marble staircase, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. Her white apron and lace headband seemed so fragile amidst the heavily armed men preparing for a bloodbath.

"Will you promise me you won't hesitate to run if the line breaks, Amelie?" Anselm asked, walking over to her and taking her small, trembling hands in his.

"I won't leave you," Amelie whispered, tears streaming down her fair cheeks. "You said you would protect me. Let me stay with you."

"Do you believe I could focus on slaughtering my enemies if I knew you were standing in the line of fire?" Anselm asked softly, his thumb gently wiping away a tear. "I need you safe so I have something to come back for."

Before Amelie could argue further, the heavy iron gates at the end of the driveway groaned loudly, buckling under the force of an armored battering ram. The roar of heavy engines and shouted commands filled the night air. The state police and federal tactical teams had arrived, bypassing negotiations entirely. The war had begun.

"Secure the perimeter! No one sets foot on these marble floors!" Anselm roared, his deep voice booming with absolute, commanding authority.

He didn't wait for his men to move. He turned his broad shoulders toward the heavy front doors, raising his weapon with cold, calculated precision as the first tactical team breached the threshold.

"Did you truly believe you could take my home and silence the truth?" Anselm yelled over the deafening sound of shattering glass, pulling the trigger.

Amelie crouched behind the thick marble banister, covering her ears as automatic gunfire erupted throughout the foyer. She watched Anselm fight, mesmerizing and terrifying, a force of pure, masculine vengeance protecting his empire and his honor. The political alliance was dead, the state was against them, and the mystery of his mother's grave still loomed large over the docks. But as she watched him hold the line, fighting for their survival, Amelie knew that the true reign of the Valegrove syndicate had finally begun, forged in fire and absolute loyalty.
