Chapter 9

Thomas stared up at Alessia, his fair skin slick with sweat under the bright, unrelenting glare of the chandeliers. He swallowed hard, the realization that his treason had been utterly exposed paralyzing his tongue.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Thomas stammered, his American accent trembling. "I've been loyal! I've protected this house!"
Alessia did not raise her voice. She simply nodded to Vincent.
Vincent applied a brutal, twisting pressure to Thomas’s pinned arm. The security chief let out a sharp, agonizing howl that echoed off the vaulted ceiling.
"Loyalty is not a word you get to use anymore," Alessia said, her voice as smooth and cold as polished ice. "The Falcones are outside. Garrett gave them the signal. If you want to live long enough to see the inside of a prison cell, you will give me the override codes for the perimeter defense system. You have ten seconds before Vincent breaks your shoulder."
"Okay! Okay!" Thomas gasped, his face pressed against the cold marble. "The southern service gate! The one near the old carriage house! I disabled the magnetic locks and looped the camera feed! They are coming through the access tunnels!"
Alessia stood up, her luxurious gown swishing around her ankles. Her mind processed the tactical information with the speed of a supercomputer.
"Vincent," Alessia commanded, turning to her underboss. "Take a twelve-man strike team to the access tunnels. Flood the corridor with tear gas and seal the blast doors. Trap them inside. I want the Falcone strike team suffocated and captured without a single shot fired on the main grounds."
"Consider it done, Boss," Vincent grinned, a feral, predatory look crossing his face. He hauled Thomas up by the collar, dragging the disgraced security chief toward the service exit. "Come on, Tommy. You're going to help us lock the door."
As the men left the ballroom, Alessia turned back to her mother. Miriam was standing calmly by the un-ruined side of the banquet table, her hands folded neatly over her cardigan.
"The house is secure, Mother," Alessia said softly, the harsh edge of her mafia persona fading slightly in the presence of the matriarch. "The Falcones walked into a bottleneck. They will be dealt with."
"You have a brilliant mind, Alessia," Miriam said, her rosy cheeks lifting in a proud smile. "Your father would have been in awe of how you handled this betrayal."
"My father would have executed Garrett the moment he disrespected you," Alessia replied, her jaw tightening.
"Perhaps," Miriam agreed gently. "But forcing a proud, arrogant man to crawl out of the gates in his ruined tuxedo sends a much more powerful message to the other families. You did not just defeat him; you dismantled his dignity."
"It is only the beginning," Alessia said, walking toward the tall, arched windows that overlooked the long, winding driveway of the estate.
She looked out into the night. In the distance, illuminated by the harsh security spotlights, she could see a small, pathetic figure dragging himself across the gravel. Garrett Lawson, stripped of his title, his protection, and his pride, was crawling toward the iron gates, his soaked clothes clinging to his bruised body.
"He thought he could use me," Alessia murmured, watching him suffer. "He thought he could steal my throne."
"He underestimated the queen," Miriam said, standing beside her daughter.
"They all do," Alessia replied.

Suddenly, the heavy, encrypted radio on Alessia’s hip hissed with static.
"Boss," a voice cracked over the channel. It was the sniper team positioned on the roof. "We have a situation at the front gate."
