Chapter 8

Elena’s recording was seventeen minutes long.
Every minute made Hattie’s ambition clearer.
She had spent years presenting herself as the loyal cousin who wanted nothing except a place near family. Privately, she had been recruiting men who resented Salvatore’s leadership, men who believed a thirty-two-year-old boss with a wife and young daughter had become too cautious.
Nolan found those men.
Hattie frightened them.
Then she offered safety.
“She never asks anyone to betray Salvatore directly,” Elena explained on the recording. “She asks what they would do if something happened to him.”
Anthony’s jaw tightened.
That question had been asked of him.
Six months earlier.
He had dismissed it as ugly dinner conversation.
Now he remembered Hattie mentioning his eldest son two minutes later.
Salvatore noticed his expression.
“She approached you.”
Anthony nodded.
“I said no.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Anthony looked ashamed. “Because I thought refusing was enough.”
Salvatore understood.
Silence protects more than cowards.
Sometimes it protects predators from people who believe private resistance counts as action.
The recording continued.
Elena revealed that Hattie’s real objective was succession. If Salvatore died while Ella was still a child, Hattie intended to present herself as the only adult Carbone relative strong enough to guide the family.
“Guide,” Anthony said bitterly.
Salvatore stared at the recorder.
Hattie would not need to claim the organization openly.
She only needed Ella small enough to stand behind.
Elena’s voice softened near the end.
“If they take me, do not let them tell you I left because I stopped loving you.”
Salvatore lowered his head.
Eight months of anger collapsed into one sentence.
“I was trying to find enough proof to come to you without making you choose between your wife and your blood.”
Then came a sound outside the hidden room.
Elena whispered one last thing.
“Matteo says he knows where they move people they cannot kill.”
The recording ended.
Anthony looked at Salvatore.

They finally had a path to Elena.
But only if Matteo Vieri was still alive.
