Chapter 1

Salvatore returned early and found his seventy-five-year-old mother wearing a chain around her neck.

Adelaide sat weakly beside a stone planter while forty Carbone guests ate beneath the summer lights. Hattie stood beside her holding the loose decorative chain like a leash, and Adelaide’s untouched plate had just been kicked beneath the banquet table.

“If she wants dinner,” Hattie said with a laugh, “make her bark a few times like a dog.”

The garden doors opened behind her.

Every conversation stopped.

Salvatore crossed the patio without saying a word. He removed the chain from Adelaide’s neck, placed his mother behind him, and turned just as Ella ran forward and took her grandmother’s trembling hand.

“Dad,” the three-year-old cried, “Grandma hasn’t eaten for six days.”

Something in Salvatore’s face disappeared.

Not anger.

Everything before anger.

Nolan stepped between him and Hattie, shoved him backward, and struck him across the cheek as if the entire banquet still belonged to people who feared Hattie more than they feared the head of the Carbone family.

“She eats when she answers the question,” Nolan said with a smirk.

Salvatore looked at him.

Nolan swung again.

The next few seconds ended with Nolan crashing beside an overturned ice trough while bottles and melting ice scattered beneath the tables. Hattie tried to seize Adelaide’s arm, but Salvatore tore her hand away and sent her backward through the stacked fruit display.

Oranges rolled across the patio.

Nobody moved to help her.

Salvatore crouched beside his mother. Adelaide would not look at him. Shame seemed to hurt her more than hunger.

“What were they asking you?”

Her mouth trembled.

Finally, Adelaide whispered the secret she had protected for six days.

“I saw them force Elena into a car.”

Salvatore froze.

Elena.

His wife.

Missing eight months.

Adelaide finally looked at him.

“There was another man inside.”

Salvatore rose slowly and turned toward Nolan.

“I’ll ask once.”

His voice was almost gentle.

“Where is my wife, and who was the stranger?”

For the first time that evening, Nolan looked afraid.
