Chapter 7

The sealed room had not been opened in twenty years.

Salvatore went down with Anthony and four trusted guards while Adelaide remained upstairs with Ella. Hattie and Nolan were kept under watch in separate rooms, far enough apart that neither could shape the other’s story.

The brass key fit.

Inside was not a vault.

It was an archive of a different kind.

Cassette tapes.

Photographs.

Old family rings.

A wall map with colored pins marking alliances that no longer officially existed.

Anthony stared at it.

“This was your father’s private command room.”

Salvatore understood immediately why Elena had come here.

The Carbone organization Salvatore inherited had supposedly cut ties with the coercive systems his father used. Crews were loyal because they chose the family, not because someone held their children, wives, or debts over them.

Yet several of the current pins matched names still active under Salvatore.

Someone had restarted the old network.

Anthony found a modern recorder hidden among the older tapes.

One file.

Elena’s voice.

“Salvatore, if you hear this, I was right.”

He stopped breathing.

Anthony looked away, giving him privacy without leaving.

Elena continued.

“Hattie has been rebuilding August Carbone’s private faction. Nolan is helping her. They are offering protection to frightened capos, then creating the fear they need protection from.”

Salvatore closed his eyes.

Exactly what Hattie had done to Adelaide.

Exactly what she had begun doing to Ella’s grandmother in front of an entire banquet.

Elena’s recording continued.

“Matteo Vieri contacted me because he recognized the pattern. He was never the traitor. August framed him.”

Anthony whispered a curse.

Then Elena said something neither man expected.

“Hattie knows Salvatore will never give her command while Adelaide is alive.”

Salvatore opened his eyes.

The recording continued.

“She doesn’t only want territory.”

Pause.

“She wants the Carbone bloodline beneath her.”

Anthony turned.

Salvatore replayed the sentence.

Hattie had spent six days starving Adelaide.

May you like

Not merely for information.

She had already begun practicing what the family would look like if Salvatore stopped controlling it.
