Chapter 14

Salvatore brought every senior Carbone capo back to the summer patio that night.

Same tables.

Same stone planters.

Same place Adelaide had sat with a chain around her neck.

This time she sat beside Ella with a full plate in front of her.

Hattie noticed immediately.

“You’re making theater.”

Salvatore looked at her.

“No.”

He nodded toward the empty chair beside him.

“I’m correcting yours.”

Raymond was brought out first.

Then Nolan.

Both men had already started blaming Hattie.

That was the weakness of loyalty built on fear. Everyone remained devoted until devotion stopped being useful.

Anthony told the room about the hunting cellar.

Then Salvatore played Elena’s recording from the sealed command room.

Hattie’s face changed when Elena’s voice filled the patio.

Not because the recording was unexpected.

Because Salvatore had found it.

When Elena described the plan to control frightened capos, three men at the table looked away.

Salvatore noticed every one.

He did not accuse them.

Not yet.

Then Raymond’s travel bag was placed on the table.

Ella’s clothes.

Medicine.

Stuffed bear.

Hattie stared at it.

Salvatore spoke quietly.

“You starved my mother for six days because she would not give you a key.”

Hattie said nothing.

“You helped take my wife because she discovered your faction.”

Silence.

“You prepared to take my daughter so you could return her later and call yourself necessary.”

Hattie finally laughed.

“You think your wife made you strong?”

“No.”

“She made you soft.”

Salvatore looked at Adelaide.

Then Ella.

Then back at Hattie.

“You put a chain around a seventy-five-year-old woman because she would not answer you.”

His voice remained calm.

“That is not strength.”

Hattie’s smile faded.

“That is what weak people do when nobody obeys them willingly.”

Around the table, men who once feared Hattie stopped avoiding her eyes.

And for the first time, she understood the family was no longer afraid of what she might do next.
