Chapter 16

The Carbone organization changed quietly.

That was deliberate.

Salvatore removed Raymond from every inner circle. Nolan disappeared from family operations. Hattie lost the name, privileges, crews, and rooms she had treated as birthrights.

But Salvatore did not purge everyone who had listened to her.

He separated fear from betrayal.

Anthony helped.

Some men had taken money.

Some had passed schedules.

Some had simply remained silent after Hattie mentioned their children.

Those were not the same acts, and Salvatore refused to pretend they were.

Adelaide watched all of it.

One afternoon she asked why.

“Your father would have removed half the table.”

Salvatore looked at her. “Did that work?”

She almost smiled.

“No.”

“Then I’m not repeating him because it looks powerful.”

Adelaide nodded.

She understood the lesson more deeply than anyone.

Elena remained at the estate, but in separate rooms.

Salvatore never asked when that would change.

She began walking farther each week as her ankle healed. Ella followed her everywhere, sometimes holding Elena’s hand and sometimes Adelaide’s.

One evening, Salvatore found all three at the summer patio.

Ella had placed a plate in front of Adelaide.

“Eat, Grandma.”

Adelaide smiled. “Am I allowed?”

Ella frowned.

“You’re always allowed.”

The words were innocent.

They hit every adult differently.

Elena looked toward Salvatore.

He looked at his mother.

Adelaide lowered her eyes for a moment before picking up her fork.

No chain.

No permission.

No one watching to decide whether she had earned dinner.

Later, Elena stood beside Salvatore near the garden doors.

“Hattie tried to teach Ella that control means love.”

Salvatore nodded.

“So did your father with Adelaide.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked toward their daughter.

“Then we make sure it ends here.”

Salvatore watched Ella steal an orange from the fruit display and place it proudly on Adelaide’s plate.

For once, the Carbone family was not trying to look strong.

It was learning how not to be cruel.
