Chapter 3

The air in the ballroom seemed to completely evaporate. The natural, bright cinematic lighting cast sharp, uncompromising shadows across Helena’s suddenly terrified face. The older woman slowly began to back away, her expensive heels clicking erratically against the polished marble floor. The realization that her three-year web of intricate, sociopathic lies had just collapsed in front of the entire syndicate paralyzed her completely.

"Nora," Roman said. He spoke slowly, with controlled, agonizing pauses between his words. His volume was incredibly low, yet the sheer force of his authority demanded absolute, unquestioning attention. "Explain this. Right now."

Nora’s hands trembled violently as she clutched Sophie tighter against her modest coat. "She... she came to the hospital three years ago. Right after Sophie was born. She told me the rival families ambushed your convoy."

"Keep your mouth shut, you lying whore!" Helena shrieked, panic entirely consuming her aristocratic facade, her American accent pitching into a hysterical octave.

Roman did not even look at his mother. He kept his piercing, intimidating eyes locked directly on Nora, silently commanding her to continue.

"She told us you were dead, Roman," Nora wept, the dam finally breaking after years of solitary, agonizing grief. "She forced us into a car and dropped us in the slums. She told us your money stopped three years ago, and if I ever tried to contact the family or ask for a dime, her men would kill my baby."

"Lies! All lies!" Helena yelled, desperately trying to regain control of the narrative as several capos began to turn their heads toward the commotion. "She is extorting us, Roman! She took a massive payout and abandoned you when you were indicted! She’s a parasite!"

Roman’s broad shoulders went completely rigid beneath his tailored three-piece suit. His jaw clenched so hard the bone looked ready to snap under his fair skin. He had been told by his mother that Nora had taken a massive cash payout and vanished in the night because she couldn't handle the pressure of the mafia lifestyle. Two separate, perfectly orchestrated lies to keep them permanently apart.

"I never took a dime from her!" Nora fired back, her voice ringing with fierce, maternal defiance. "I worked three jobs just to keep the heat on! Look at my daughter, Roman! Does she look like we took a payout?"

Roman looked down at Sophie’s torn, filthy clothes. His flesh and blood, an heir to a massive criminal empire, had been living in utter squalor while he sat on a throne of unimaginable wealth. The sheer magnitude of the betrayal ignited a dark, freezing fire within his chest.

"Roman, please, you have to listen to me," Helena stammered, her hands shaking as she clutched her heavy pearl necklace. "It is not what it looks like. I was protecting you. I was protecting the bloodline from a commoner!"

Roman finally turned his head. His cold, sharp eyes locked onto his mother, pinning her against the registration table like a butterfly on a board.

"You told me. They were gone," Roman stated, his voice a lethal, freezing whisper that promised absolute destruction.
