Chapter 8

The garden pavilion fell silent, save for the gentle rustle of the wind through the ivy. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the spilled juice, the overturned paper cups, and the discarded blindfold—the wreckage of a nightmare that had finally ended.
Damon stood alone in the center of the pavilion. He smoothed the lapels of his tailored dark suit, his breathing steady, his terrifying, deeply masculine aura slowly receding. He turned his attention back to his sons.
Caleb and Micah were still huddled by the entrance, holding hands. They looked at their father, their eyes wide with a mixture of awe and residual fear. They had just watched the most dangerous man in the city dismantle their tormentor with terrifying efficiency.
Damon walked slowly toward them. He dropped to one knee, bringing himself down to their eye level. The cold, sharp, intimidating look vanished entirely from his eyes, replaced by a profound, aching tenderness.
"Come here," Damon murmured, holding his tattooed hands out to them.
The two boys didn't hesitate. They ran to him, throwing their small arms around his neck. Damon caught them, pulling both of his sons into a fierce, protective embrace. He buried his face in their hair, his chest tight with a fierce, paternal love that eclipsed everything else in his violent world.
"I'm sorry, Dad," Caleb cried, his face buried in Damon’s shoulder. "I didn't know it was Micah. I swear I didn't know."
"I know you didn't, Caleb," Damon whispered, rubbing the eight-year-old's back. "It was not your fault. It was a trick. You did nothing wrong."
"She said we had to be tough," Micah hiccuped, clutching his father's crisp shirt.
"You are tough," Damon said, pulling back slightly to look both of his sons in the eyes. "But strength is not about hurting the people you love. It is about protecting them. Do you understand?"
Both boys nodded earnestly, their rosy cheeks stained with tears.
"She is gone," Damon promised them, his voice a low, steady rumble of absolute reassurance. "She will never come back here. No one will ever hurt you in this house again."
Damon stood up, lifting Micah into his arms and resting his heavy hand comfortingly on Caleb’s shoulder.

"Let us go inside," Damon said softly. "I think we have had enough of the garden for today. We will have ice cream in the kitchen. Just the three of us."
As he guided his sons back toward the massive doors of the main estate, Damon’s encrypted smartphone vibrated heavily in the pocket of his trousers. He pulled it out, glancing at the bright screen. It was a message from his head capo, sent via a secure channel.
