Chapter 5

Panic, sharp and visceral, finally pierced Brielle’s aristocratic facade. She saw the absolute, freezing void in Damon’s eyes and knew that the carefully constructed illusion of her power had just been shattered. Desperate, irrational fear took over.
She raised her hand again, intending to strike him a second time to force him back.
It was a fatal miscalculation.
Damon’s reflexes were honed by decades of brutal underworld survival. Before her hand could even begin its downward arc, he caught her wrist. His heavily tattooed hand clamped around her delicate forearm like a steel vice, stopping her momentum instantly. He didn't squeeze to break the bone; he simply immobilized her with terrifying, effortless strength.
With his other hand, Damon delivered one thunderous, open-handed counterstrike directly across her cheek.
The impact was devastating.
The sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted Brielle off her expensive designer heels. She stumbled violently sideways, completely losing her equilibrium. Her party dress twisted around her legs as she crashed downward, dropping heavily onto the padded cushions of the white wicker loveseat.
As she fell, her elbow violently caught the edge of the low gift table.
The impact sent the table shuddering. Brightly colored paper cups tipped over, spilling sticky, sweet fruit juice across the pristine green grass. Small gift boxes tumbled onto the patio stones, their ribbons unraveling.
Brielle gasped for air, clutching her rapidly bruising cheek, her chest heaving with sheer terror. She lay sprawled awkwardly on the loveseat, staring up at the man she had intended to marry.

No dialogue was spoken. The absolute silence of the garden was only broken by the soft dripping of spilled juice hitting the grass.
Damon stood perfectly still. He did not adjust his suit or rub his knuckles. His breathing remained slow, deep, and entirely controlled. He had physically dismantled her in less than a second, yet his posture remained impeccably elegant. He stood firmly planted in the center of the pavilion, a permanent, unyielding barrier between the woman on the loveseat and the two children trembling by the entrance.
