Chapter 14

Sebastian requested one final meeting.
I agreed.
Neutral Moreau property.
Ruth came.
He hated that.
Good.
My uncle looked older.
Power does part of a man’s posture.
Remove it and gravity seems stronger.
“You dismantled everything Henri built.”
He said it before sitting.
“No.”
I adjusted my cuff.
“I dismantled what you kept pretending Henri wanted.”
Sebastian laughed.
“He would hate what you’ve become.”
Ruth answered before me.
“He left a cassette specifically warning Vincent about you.”
That shut him up.
I placed the black notebook on the table.
Not as proof.
As history.
“Why did you never believe Henri when he closed the routes?”
Sebastian stared.
“Because he was sick.”
“No.”
Ruth’s voice stayed calm.
“You decided disagreement meant illness.”
There it was.
Same pattern.
When people change, controlling families prefer explanations that make the change invalid.
Sick.
Weak.
Manipulated.
Soft.
Never simply different.
Sebastian looked at me.
“You think Moreau survives kindness?”
“I think Moreau survives adaptation.”
“Same softness.”
“No.”
I leaned closer.
“Soft would have been pretending you didn’t try this because confronting you hurt.”
Silence.
He knew.
I had loved him once.
Still did somewhere.
Uncle who taught me cards.
Took me fishing.
Gave terrible birthday gifts.
Also man who staged two family “accidents.”
Both true.
“I won’t kill you.”
He smiled bitterly.
“Mercy?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“Retirement.”
Real this time.
No contact with operations.
No capos.
No garage access.
No messages through family.
He laughed.
“You can’t stop people listening to me.”
Correct.
I could only stop giving him formal pathways.
Then I said:
“If they still choose you after knowing everything, that’s information I need.”
His smile faded.
Truth is useful that way.
Before leaving, Sebastian looked at Ruth.
“You always chose Henri.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Then pointed at me.
“I chose the person you were trying to hurt.”
May you like
Different.
Important.
