Chapter 11

The six captains came to me together.
Not brave.
Practical.
Sebastian was finished.
Marcus removed.
They wanted to know where they stood.
I made them sit in the garage.
Same floor.
Same parts cage.
Same oil stain still visible in the concrete.
Not for theater.
A little for theater.
I asked one question.
“What did Sebastian tell you would happen last night?”
The first said I would miss the meeting.
The second said a “private family discussion” would follow.
The third was told I intended to retire certain older branches.
The fourth believed Ruth was secretly selling garage operations.
There it was.
Different lies.
Same destination.
Divide loyalty by customizing fear.
I looked at Ruth.
She shook her head.
“Lazy.”
One captain almost smiled.
Bad timing.
Then I told them everything.
Not every operational detail.
Enough.
The car.
The tracker.
The planned interception.
Damien as scapegoat.
Ruth as fallback.
Marcus gathering them while I was isolated.
Their faces changed one by one.
One man cursed Sebastian.
I stopped him.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“You do not get to become innocent because the architect was worse.”
Silence.
They had agreed to withdraw support without confronting me.
That remained their choice.
Two lost command permanently.
One left the organization.
Three stayed in reduced roles.
Not because I wanted mercy theater.
Because consequences should match knowledge and action.
Ruth later asked:
“You sure?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
I had started distrusting leaders who were always sure.
Then she said:
“You know what Henri would do?”
“What?”
“Something dramatic.”
I laughed.
“Probably.”
“Don’t.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
We stood beside my damaged car.
Rafe had already ordered it dismantled safely for inspection.
I watched men remove panels.
Piece by piece.
No explosion.
No grand destruction.
Just machinery revealing where hands had interfered.
Family felt similar.
The danger had never been one dramatic act.
It was small access points accumulated over years.
A cousin with a key.
An uncle with nostalgia.
A capo with old loyalty.
