Chapter 1

The afternoon sun washed over the luxury pool terrace in a flood of bright, cinematic light. There was no hazy yellow tint to the sky, no artificial warmth to soften the edges of the day; the natural lighting was crisp, pure, and brilliantly clear. It perfectly illuminated the fair, rosy skin of the elite white American guests gathered to celebrate the union of two powerful underworld families. Waiters navigated the pristine stone tiles around a rolling cocktail station, where silver ice buckets gleamed and plastic champagne flutes were neatly stacked alongside folded cocktail napkins.
Valentina Moretti stood near the edge of the deep end, an absolute vision of power and elegance. At twenty-nine, the head of the Moretti organization was intimidatingly beautiful. She wore an elegant dark-green formal gown that draped flawlessly over her silhouette. A heavy family signet ring rested on her finger, catching the sunlight alongside her diamond earrings and luxury wristwatch.
"The Hales are enjoying our hospitality a little too much," a loyal capo murmured, stepping to Valentina's side. His American accent was sharp and professional.
"Let them drink," Valentina replied, her voice smooth but laced with a dangerous chill. "They need to feel comfortable before we discuss the new territory lines tomorrow."
A few yards away, her three-year-old son, Ethan, sat quietly on a padded lounge chair. Dressed in a navy formal shirt, tailored trousers, and tiny dress shoes, his rosy cheeks puffed in concentration as he tapped on his small, durable tablet case.
Suddenly, Vanessa Hale, the thirty-year-old bride, stormed away from a group of laughing bridesmaids. Her luxurious white wedding gown rustled aggressively against the tiles. Diamonds sparkled at her ears and on her fingers, but her fair face was twisted into an ugly, contemptuous sneer. She marched directly toward Ethan’s chair.
"Get out of my seating area, you little brat," Vanessa snapped, her voice dripping with entitlement.
Ethan looked up, his wide, innocent eyes blinking in confusion. "I'm just playing my game," he said softly.
"I don't care what you are doing," Vanessa hissed, glancing around to ensure Valentina was distracted. "This is my wedding. You don't belong here."

Without warning, Vanessa’s hand shot out. She violently slapped the three-year-old boy across his rosy cheek. The sharp sound cracked over the ambient music. Before Ethan could even cry out, Vanessa planted her hands on his small chest and shoved him backward with all her strength.
Ethan tumbled backward off the edge of the stone coping. He fell directly into the deep end of the pool, the water swallowing him whole as he disappeared beneath the shimmering blue surface.
