Chapter 9

The heavy doors swung inward, revealing the expansive master suite. Unlike the rest of the mansion, the lighting here was dim, the heavy blackout curtains drawn tightly across the massive windows. The air was stale, smelling faintly of antiseptic and despair.

Soren stepped into the room, his polished leather shoes making no sound on the thick rugs. Verity followed closely behind, her expressive eyes adjusting to the gloom.

"Lara?" Soren asked, his deep voice cracking slightly, the single word echoing in the cavernous space. "Are you here?"

From the far corner of the room, near a large, unmade bed, a small figure darted out of the shadows. A little girl, no older than five, with messy dark hair and wide, terrified eyes, ran toward a woman sitting slumped in a velvet armchair.

"Daddy!" the little girl cried out, her voice trembling.

Soren dropped to his knees instantly, tossing his weapon aside. He didn't care about the tailored suit or the dirty floor. "Mia?" he asked, his voice choking with overwhelming emotion. "Is it really you?"

The little girl hesitated, peering from behind the armchair, her small hands clutching the fabric. "Are you mad at us?" she whimpered. "Aunt Cressida said you were mad at us and locked us away."

"How could I ever be mad at you?" Soren asked, tears finally breaking through his cold, observant facade, streaming down his angular face. "Did you really think I wouldn't come for you?"

Mia broke into a run, throwing her small arms around Soren's neck. He caught her, burying his face in her hair, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, heaving sobs. He held her tightly, as if afraid she would vanish into thin air.

Verity watched from the doorway, her own eyes filling with tears as she witnessed the reunion.

Slowly, the woman in the armchair shifted. Lara Harrow, once a vibrant, beautiful woman, looked incredibly frail and exhausted. Her fair skin was pale and drawn, her clothes loose on her diminishing frame. She looked up, her tired eyes locking onto her husband.

"Soren?" Lara whispered, her voice weak and disbelieving. "Is it real?"

Soren gently set Mia down and crawled across the remaining space, taking his wife's hands in his. "Are you hurt, Lara?" he asked, his voice full of desperate urgency, tracing the lines of her face. "Can you walk? What has she done to you?"

"She just kept us here," Lara sobbed, leaning forward to rest her forehead against his chest. "She said you didn't want us. She said you had moved on. We were so scared."

"Do you remember me?" Soren asked, kissing the top of her head, his hands trembling as he held her. "Do you remember that I would burn the world down to keep you safe?"

"I remember," Lara wept, clinging to his dark suit.

Soren held his family for a long time, the broken pieces of his heart finally snapping back into place. When he finally looked up, his eyes found Verity standing quietly near the door.

"Did you know you are an angel disguised as a maid?" Soren asked her, his voice thick with gratitude.

"I am just Verity, sir," she smiled softly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "But we need to go. Cressida won't stay quiet for long."
