Chapter 1

The ballroom was a masterpiece of luminous architecture, flooded with bright, cinematic lighting that banished every shadow. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted, gilded ceiling, casting a soft, elegant warmth across the ivory-paneled walls. There was no heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint to the light; instead, gentle golden highlights danced across the clean whites of the floral arrangements and the polished surfaces of the room. Tall candles glowed steadily in heavy silver candelabras, illuminating the pristine white roses, fine porcelain plates, and crystal stemware that adorned the crowded banquet tables. Fifty wedding guests and staff moved through the space, their fair, rosy skin glowing in the immaculate light.
At the center of the room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Soren Harrow, the thirty-one-year-old mafia boss of the city's most feared syndicate, stood frozen. He was movie-star handsome, possessing a distinctly masculine presence with broad shoulders, an angular face, and a sharply defined jawline. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was swept back elegantly. A tailored dark three-piece suit clung to his athletic frame, accented by a heavy family signet ring, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. Refined, artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, and a small, intricate design peeked out from above his collar on his neck.
Yet, despite his immense power, he was currently restrained. Two massive bodyguards—one Black American, one white American, both wearing dark suits and earpieces—gripped his upper arms with unyielding force.
Soren did not struggle. His cold, observant eyes were hollow, haunted by the belief that his wife had abandoned him and their daughter six months ago.
Standing before him was Cressida Harrow, his fifty-six-year-old aunt and the former family matriarch. She wore a luxurious formal gown dripping with pearls, heavy rings glittering on her fingers as she stepped into his personal space. Her high heels clicked sharply against the marble floor.
"Is this the extent of your loyalty, Cressida?" Soren asked, his deep, quiet voice cutting through the ambient noise of the ballroom. His tone was perfectly controlled, the measured pause chilling the air. "Do you think public humiliation will force me to yield my territory to you?"
Cressida’s lips twisted into a vicious, triumphant sneer. Without a word of warning, she raised her hand and violently slapped him across the face.
The sharp crack echoed over the tables. Soren’s head turned sharply with the brutal impact. A heavy silence fell over the immediate vicinity, broken only by the cruel, mocking laughter of several older relatives seated nearby.

"You were always a pathetic, weak boy pretending to be a king," Cressida mocked, her American accent dripping with absolute disdain. She leaned closer, her eyes flashing with malice. "Even your wife couldn’t stand you. She took your brat and ran the moment she realized what a failure you are."
Soren’s jaw tightened, the neatly trimmed stubble scraping against his collar. "Does lying to yourself make you feel like you've won?" he asked quietly, refusing to break.
