Chapter 8

The standoff in the luminous, sterile corridor was absolute. The two tactical guards held their ground, their weapons leveled at Soren’s chest, but their eyes betrayed a deep, instinctual fear. They were facing the true head of the syndicate, a man whose reputation for calculated violence was legendary.

"We take our orders from Cressida now, sir," the second guard stammered, his finger trembling visibly on the trigger. "She said you were mentally compromised. She said you were a danger to the family."

"Do I look compromised to you?" Soren asked, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that echoed off the ivory walls. He took another deliberate step forward, entirely ignoring the barrels pointed at him. "Do I look like a man who is about to ask you twice?"

Verity remained a few paces behind him, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. She watched the broad, powerful shoulders of the mafia boss, marveling at the sheer, overwhelming masculine dominance he projected. He was unarmed against automatic weapons, yet he controlled the space entirely.

"Put the gun down, Mr. Harrow," the lead guard ordered, trying to sound authoritative. "We don't want to shoot you."

"Are you ready to die for my aunt?" Soren asked, his cold, observant eyes locking onto the lead guard with piercing intensity. "Do you think she will care when your blood stains this carpet? Or do you believe she will simply hire another fool to take your place?"

The guards exchanged a frantic, uncertain glance. The bright, clear lighting of the hallway offered no shadows to hide their hesitation.

"If you lower your weapons and walk to the elevator, you will live to see tomorrow," Soren stated, phrasing his ultimatum as a chilling inquiry. "If you refuse, do you understand that I will personally ensure your families receive your remains in very small boxes?"

The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds. The sheer force of Soren's willpower crushed the guards' resolve. The lead guard swallowed hard, slowly lowering his weapon, his eyes dropping to the floor. The second guard immediately followed suit.

"Are you going to open those doors, or must I do it myself?" Soren asked, gesturing toward the heavy double doors with the barrel of his pistol.

The lead guard scrambled backward, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his belt. He fumbled with the complex locks on the reinforced doors, his hands shaking violently. With a heavy, metallic clank, the deadbolts retracted.

"Will you get out of my sight now?" Soren asked.

The two guards didn't hesitate. They turned and sprinted down the hallway toward the elevator, desperate to escape the wrath of the king they had foolishly defied.

Soren stood before the heavy wooden doors. He lowered his weapon, his artistic tattoos stark against the dark metal. He took a deep, shuddering breath, the first sign of physical vulnerability he had shown all evening.

"Are you ready, sir?" Verity asked softly, stepping up beside him.

"Can a man ever be ready to face the ghosts he thought he had buried?" Soren asked. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and pushed the heavy doors open.
