Chapter 4

Emilio froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. He briefly looked at Lenora, a flash of profound, unbearable quiet concern softening his cold expression as the reality of her three-day torture cemented itself in his mind. She had been starved in his own home, under his own roof, simply for the quiet affection they shared.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Emilio’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his gaze moving first toward Claudia, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened slightly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.

He held Claudia’s eyes in a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath. Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Emilio Crowne.

The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to bathe the room in their bright, airy light, but the banquet had fundamentally shattered. The guests remained paralyzed in their champagne velvet chairs, watching the confrontation unfold with breathless terror. They were seasoned politicians and syndicate lieutenants, but none of them dared to intervene in a dispute of this magnitude.

Claudia stared up at Emilio, her fair, rosy skin drained of all color, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She gripped the fabric of her sculpted satin evening gown, her hands shaking violently.

"Are you struggling to find a suitable explanation for my son's memory, Claudia?" Emilio finally asked.

His deep, low voice remained completely level. The measured pause between his words was a calculated instrument of psychological torture. He did not step toward her, but the sheer gravity of his presence pressed her against the wall.

"Emilio, darling, please," Claudia gasped, her American accent pitching high and breathless with panic. "He is just a child! He misunderstood! The maid was being insubordinate! She was trying to turn the staff against me while you were gone! I had to establish discipline!"

"Does establishing discipline require the systemic starvation of an innocent woman?" Emilio inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"She brought it on herself!" Claudia cried, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. She pointed a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at the housemaid. "She thinks she can take my place! She thinks you belong to her! You cannot humiliate me over a servant!"

Lenora held her ground, her elegant posture wavering slightly as the dizziness threatened to overwhelm her. She sank gratefully into the velvet chair Emilio had drawn out for her, resting her trembling hands on the polished walnut table.

"Would my son fabricate a lie to destroy the foundation of our alliance?" Emilio asked, his voice echoing coldly off the ivory-paneled walls.

"Yes! He hates me!" Claudia shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their fair faces pale with shock, utterly unwilling to cross the mafia boss.

Emilio slowly swept his gaze across the room, taking in the numerous guests sitting frozen at their tables.

"Have you all located the exits, or do my men need to assist you?" Emilio asked the room at large.

It was phrased as a question, but the command hidden within it was unmistakable and absolute. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood and marble floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no polite farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men in tailored suits and women in evening gowns fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, eager to escape the blast radius of Emilio Crowne’s wrath.
