Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Crowne empire began to violently fracture.

Claudia shifted smoothly in her champagne velvet chair, attempting to intercept the explosive tension before it could fully detonate. She met Emilio’s cold gaze with a faint, reassuring smile. She forced a patient, dismissive look onto her face, though her fair skin had turned a sickly shade of white beneath her makeup.

"Lenora's dieting, darling," Claudia stated, her American accent dripping with casual dismissiveness.

Her eyes frantically searched Emilio’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests. She needed him to turn his attention away from the trembling maid and accept the lie that the servant was simply managing her own figure.

Emilio did not return her smile. He did not look at his fiancée.

Instead, he kept his cold, sharp eyes locked entirely on the housemaid standing beside his right shoulder. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his knuckles on the edge of the polished walnut table.

Lenora met Emilio’s intense, unyielding gaze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Claudia Voss, a woman whose family commanded a powerful syndicate of their own. But looking into Emilio's perceptive eyes, feeling the quiet, mutual affection that had always existed between them, Lenora knew she could not lie to him.

She struggled to keep her voice steady. Her inner brows lifted helplessly in a profound expression of physical exhaustion. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, making her beautiful eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers.

"Three days ago," Lenora answered, her voice a fragile, breathy whisper. "Before you left."

The confession hung in the bright, luminous air, exposing the ugly, violent starvation hidden beneath the lavish welcome-home banquet. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests.

Emilio noticed the violent trembling of Lenora's fingers against her apron. He saw the way she swayed slightly on her feet, barely able to remain upright.

Moving with lethal fluidity, Emilio rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair. He drew out the empty chair beside him, placing his towering, broad-shouldered frame deliberately between Claudia and the housemaid. His dark tailored suit acted as a massive, physical shield, cutting off the socialite's line of sight. He placed a gentle, steadying hand on the back of the empty chair, silently commanding Lenora to sit.

Before anyone could process the sheer magnitude of the mafia boss offering his own table to a servant, a small voice broke the tableau.

Toby, sitting rigidly in his small dinner jacket, slowly turned his head. The five-year-old boy looked directly at Claudia, bypassing his father's imposing figure. His small brows drew together in quiet, innocent confusion.

"You said hunger teaches manners," Toby stated.

The childish American accent sliced through the heavy silence, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty of the woman in the sculpted satin gown. He spoke quietly, without malice, simply repeating the terrifying lesson he had overheard.
