Chapter 2

The heavy silk curtains framing the tall windows seemed to absorb the suffocating tension radiating from Lenora as she approached the head table. Her footsteps were virtually silent on the thick Persian rug, her slender, graceful proportions moving with a practiced, mechanical efficiency that required every ounce of her remaining strength. She carried a heavy silver tray bearing Emilio’s dinner, her knuckles turning bone-white as she gripped the polished metal.

"Make sure the boss's plate is set exactly at the center of the setting, Lenora," the head butler murmured as she passed him, oblivious to the fact that the young woman was barely conscious.

"I will take care of it," Lenora whispered, her American accent weak and breathy.

Lenora reached the head table. She stepped deliberately beside Emilio’s right shoulder, acutely aware of the dangerous man's proximity. The scent of his expensive cologne mingled with the overwhelming aroma of the roasted meats and white roses. It made her stomach cramp violently. She carefully set the silver tray onto a nearby serving stand and retrieved Emilio's gold-rimmed plate.

She placed the dinner flawlessly before Emilio. As she did, five-year-old Toby, sitting right beside her, looked up. The little boy had overheard Claudia’s cruel orders earlier that day. He knew the housemaid was starving.

With quiet, careful movements, Toby slid a small, silver bread plate laden with warm rolls directly toward Lenora's hand resting on the edge of the table.

Lenora’s eyes darted to the bread. Her instinct, driven by three days of agonizing hunger, took over. She began to reach her trembling fingers toward the plate.

But then, she caught a glimpse of movement. She looked up and caught Claudia’s eye across the table.

Claudia was staring directly at her. The socialite offered a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent, terrifying command promising absolute destruction if the maid dared to take the food.

Lenora stopped instantly. Her hand froze in mid-air, trembling violently, before she slowly pulled it back, pressing it tightly against her crisp white apron. She lowered her eyes, a wave of profound, devastating defeat washing over her pale face.

Emilio, whose cold, observant eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, instantly noticed the bizarre and heartbreaking interaction. He watched the way his son offered the food, and he saw the sheer, unadulterated terror and physical weakness radiating from the housemaid.

The mafia boss did not move frantically. He turned his head slowly. He looked past his son and locked his gaze directly into Lenora’s wide, exhausted eyes.

"Lenora. When did you last eat?"

Emilio’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke exclusively in questions, a chilling linguistic habit that demanded absolute truth. He allowed a measured, agonizing pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the ballroom like a straight razor.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the polished walnut tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly to the tables. The polite, affluent conversation died in their throats. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid. The entire gala froze, suspended in a moment of terrifying, breathless anticipation.
