Chapter 2

The ambient hum of the crowded Christmas reception flowed seamlessly around the room, masking the quiet, desperate exhaustion radiating from the young maid. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of polished shoes continued across the vast salon, but near the glowing fireplace, a profound, innocent tragedy was rapidly unfolding.

Alina paused beside a polished walnut console, her fair hands trembling slightly as she leaned against the cool wood just to keep herself upright. Her breath hitched in her chest, a terrifying, anxious flutter that she desperately tried to suppress. She had been working for fourteen hours straight, driven to the point of collapse by Serena’s relentless, punishing demands, but the physical labor was nothing compared to the cruel, sadistic punishment she had already endured that afternoon.

"Are you quite alright to keep serving, Alina?" a passing guest asked, noting the dark shadows beneath the maid's expressive eyes and her pale complexion. "You look as though you might faint on the marble."

"I am perfectly fine, sir," Alina whispered, forcing a polite, submissive tone while suppressing a wave of grief. "Thank you for asking. I just need a moment to catch my breath before I return to the kitchens. It has been a very long day."

"Well, see that you don't drop any of the crystal," the guest replied dismissively, turning back to his conversation. "Serena would have your head."

Alina looked across the room. A few feet away, Serena stood holding a glass of champagne. The fiancée's diamond earrings caught the light as she walked deliberately toward the glowing fireplace, her emerald velvet gown rustling violently.

Alina’s heart hammered against her ribs. The secret she was hiding felt heavier than the marble pillars surrounding them. She had brought a small, white porcelain urn to the estate—a tiny memorial containing her late mother's ashes. She had kept it hidden in her quarters. But Serena had found it during an unannounced inspection. Serena had demanded she throw the "filth" away. When Alina had tearfully refused, Serena had ripped the urn from her hands, emptied the ashes onto an expensive rug, and callously vacuumed them up.

"Alina, darling," Serena called out, her voice a venomous, barely audible whisper that carried the sharp, clipped tones of her American accent as she approached the console. "Come here immediately. We have unfinished business."

"Yes, Miss Cross," Alina whispered, her expressive eyes wide with terror as she took a cautious step forward, her rumpled white apron pulling askew.

"You are a mess," Serena hissed, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as she took in the maid's disheveled hair and crooked headband. "I told you to clean yourself up. You are embarrassing me in front of the entire syndicate. You look like a street urchin."

"I am sorry, Miss Cross," Alina pleaded, her voice cracking, completely terrified of making a scene in front of the mafia boss. "I was just checking on Mabel. She was frightened."

Before Serena could launch another verbal assault, a small, cheerful voice broke through the unbearable tension.

Three-year-old Mabel Crowne stepped out from behind a burgundy velvet sofa. The toddler was a vision of innocence, with soft curls, round rosy cheeks, and little dimples. She was dressed impeccably for the holiday in a cream velvet dress, a cranberry knitted cardigan, and tiny bow shoes.

Mabel approached Alina, completely oblivious to the dangerous syndicate politics swirling around them. She held a crocheted rabbit tightly against her chest. She had witnessed the horrific vacuuming incident earlier, but her young mind had not fully comprehended the devastating reality of the cruelty.

"Mommy Alina!" Mabel announced cheerfully, her young American accent breaking the silence with natural toddler pauses as she hugged her leg. "I found my bunny! He was hiding under the big chair!"

"Oh, Mabel, hush," Alina whispered frantically, dropping to her knees and gently cupping the girl's rosy cheeks. "We talked about this, sweetie. You have to keep your voice down when the guests are here. It is very important."

"But I want to tell Daddy," Mabel pouted, her little dimples deepening. "Daddy likes my bunny. Daddy said he would play with me tonight."

"I know he does, sweetheart," Alina said, her voice cracking with suppressed tears as she looked up at the looming presence of the fiancée. "But you must go play quietly now. It is not safe here."
