Chapter 6

The realization of the absolute, humiliating betrayal that had occurred in his family cemented itself in Adrian’s calculating mind.

The physical intervention was profound. The effect on the room was instantaneous and absolute.

The sheer, commanding presence of the mafia boss stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas reception in a heartbeat. Every single guest standing near the evergreen garlands stopped eating and speaking. Champagne flutes were lowered slowly back to polished walnut consoles. The polite, affluent conversation died entirely in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified vacuum. Fifty faces turned toward the towering Christmas tree, their fair skin paling as they watched Adrian Cross.

Adrian did not yell. He did not explode. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous than any outburst of rage.

He did not look at his fiancée. He turned his broad shoulders and looked steadily at Clara.

He saw her unnatural posture, her rumpled apron, and her crooked white ruffled headband. He saw the disheveled strands of her hair framing her pale face, and the sheer, paralyzing terror in her clear, expressive eyes.

Adrian’s jaw tightened instantly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fists clenched at his sides.

He left a small, measured, agonizing pause to stretch in the bright air like an executioner's blade. He let the silence crush the oxygen from the room, ensuring that every single person present understood the gravity of the moment.

"Clara," Adrian said, his deep, quiet voice echoing loudly in the dead-silent room.

He kept his cold, unwavering gaze locked entirely on the trembling housemaid.

"Which uncle?" Adrian asked, low and measured.

The question was not born of curiosity; it was a deadly demand for confirmation, dripping with the absolute promise of violent retribution for whoever had orchestrated the treason against his bloodline.

The silence in the grand salon became a physical, suffocating pressure. The dozens of ivory candles flickering inside their glass hurricane holders seemed to be the only things moving in the entire, luminous space.

Clara swallowed hard, her pulse racing frantically. She faced Adrian, her chest heaving rapidly beneath the fitted black fabric of her dress. She knew the extreme danger of exposing the boss's fiancée. She knew the power of the Vale family, and she knew Serena’s capacity for vindictive, fatal violence against her mother.

But looking into Adrian’s eyes, feeling the absolute, terrifying demand for the truth radiating from his masculine frame, Clara found she had no choice. The presence of the mafia boss stripped away her fear of the socialite. He had just physically defended her, stepping between her and the threat.
