Chapter 3

The clatter of crystal glasses and the low hum of affluent conversations provided a rhythmic backdrop to the Christmas Eve festivities. Clara stood up, keeping Finn close to her side. She knew she had to return to the salon, but the thought of facing the woman in the emerald gown made her stomach churn violently.

"Come on, sweetie," Clara murmured, taking Finn’s small hand in hers. "We need to go find your father."

"Daddy is talking to the loud men," Finn stated matter-of-factly, dragging his miniature brown boots slightly against the marble floor. "Auntie Serena said I should stay away."

"Auntie Serena is wrong," Clara said, a sudden, fierce protectiveness flaring in her chest.

As they walked through the corridor, Clara’s mind flashed back to the horrifying secret that had placed a target on her back. Just yesterday, Clara had been assigned to clean the secluded winter conservatory on the edge of the estate. Thinking the room was empty, she had entered silently, only to witness a clandestine, private ceremony.

Serena Vale, dressed in a simple white dress, had been standing at a makeshift altar. But the man holding her hands, the man slipping a wedding band onto her finger, was not Adrian Cross.

It was Evan Cross. Adrian’s own brother.

Clara had watched in absolute, paralyzed horror as the officiant pronounced them husband and wife. Serena had secretly married Evan to secure a dual claim on the syndicate’s wealth, playing both brothers against each other while continuing her highly public engagement to Adrian.

The most devastating part of the memory was Finn. The three-year-old had been brought to the conservatory by Evan. Thinking it was just another fun family celebration, the innocent toddler had happily scattered flower petals on the floor, completely unaware that he was participating in the ultimate betrayal of his father. Serena had assumed the boy was far too young to understand or explain what he was doing, leaving Clara as the only true, credible witness to the treason.

"I threw flowers for Uncle Evan!" Finn chirped suddenly, pulling Clara from her nightmare. He squeezed his plush penguin tightly. "It was pretty."

"I know it was, baby," Clara whispered, her breath hitching as they reached the edge of the grand salon.

She stepped into the bright, airy light of the room. The golden reflections offered absolutely no place to hide her disheveled appearance. She kept her head down, navigating the carved walnut furniture and burgundy velvet sofas with agonizing care, desperately hoping to avoid the monster hiding in plain sight.
