Chapter 5

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen and focus entirely on the space beside the towering Christmas tree. Clara backed away slightly as Serena approached, her chest heaving rapidly beneath the fitted black fabric of her dress.

Serena stopped directly in front of the housemaid. She positioned herself carefully, ensuring the angle of her body shielded her harsh expression from the main room. With a smooth, calculated motion, Serena reached out and gripped Clara’s forearm.

The grip was agonizingly tight, the socialite's manicured nails digging into the maid's fragile skin through the black fabric. Serena pressed the plain, sealed envelope firmly toward Clara's chest.

Serena looked directly at Clara, maintaining her polished, affectionate public smile for the benefit of anyone watching.

"Keep quiet," Serena whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous, threatening register. "Your mother stays safe. If you open your mouth, the envelope goes to the clinic, and her life support gets turned off tonight."

Clara’s breath hitched violently in her throat. The color drained entirely from her fair, rosy face. She stared at the sealed envelope, a suffocating wave of terror washing over her. She knew the woman standing above her was a monster, entirely capable of executing a sick, defenseless woman.

"Please," Clara choked out, refusing to take the envelope, keeping her hands firmly on Finn's shoulders.

At that exact moment, Adrian Cross approached through the crowd of elegantly dressed guests. He stepped perfectly into the medium wide space, his broad-shouldered, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over the scene.

Three-year-old Finn, standing safely behind Clara's rumpled apron, noticed the sudden arrival. The toddler in the red velvet waistcoat looked up at Adrian, his innocent, rosy face lighting up with delighted recognition.

Finn completely ignored the towering, intimidating presence of his future stepmother. He let go of Clara's hand. He made a small, happy scattering gesture with his free hand, mimicking the action he had performed the day before.

"Auntie married Uncle!" Finn announced, his voice carrying the clear, flawless honesty of a child. He looked up at Adrian, entirely proud of his participation. "I threw flowers!"

The childish, clear American accent sliced through the ambient noise of the reception with the devastating force of a detonating bomb.

The words echoed off the gilded mirrors, drawing the immediate, shocked attention of every guest standing nearby.

Serena froze. She instantly released Clara’s forearm, pulling the sealed envelope back against her emerald satin gown. Her polished public smile remained glued to her lips, but it became a rigid, grotesque mask as sheer, unadulterated panic set into her eyes.

Adrian stopped moving entirely. His entire body went rigid beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at his toddler son, processing the cheerful, innocent exclamation.

He stepped directly beside Clara.
