Chapter 1

The opulent interior of the Cross estate was a masterclass in cinematic brilliance, completely flooded with a warm, golden light that chased away the bitter December frost pressing against the tall windows. Tiered crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceilings, their multifaceted prisms scattering a pure, bright illumination that lacked any trace of heavy shadows. Dozens of tall ivory candles flickered gently within thick glass hurricane holders, lined meticulously along polished walnut consoles. Gilded mirrors reflected the amber illumination across the pristine marble floors, multiplying the splendor of the carved walnut furniture and the rich burgundy velvet sofas. A towering Christmas tree stood as the room’s majestic centerpiece, sparkling with thousands of golden fairy lights, thick red ribbons, and delicate glass ornaments. Evergreen garlands framed the roaring stone fireplace, filling the expansive room with the sharp, clean scent of fresh pine. Elegantly dressed guests—a lethal mixture of syndicate capos, wealthy politicians, and elite socialites—mingled in the luxurious space, their fair, rosy skin bathed in the elegant warmth of the holiday reception.
At the absolute center of this opulent gathering stood Adrian Cross. At thirty-three, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling room with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He possessed broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular jaw was framed by naturally swept-back, slightly wavy dark hair, shadowed by an extremely short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy family signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar, a subtle hint of the lethal underworld he controlled with an iron fist.
"The northern shipping routes have been entirely secured for the winter, Adrian," murmured Vincent, a senior capo, keeping his crisp American accent low to blend with the festive string quartet playing in the background.
"Are you absolutely certain the routes are clear of interference, Vincent?" Adrian asked. He spoke slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting through the ambient noise of the room with effortless, chilling authority.
"Completely certain, Boss. The rival families understand the absolute cost of crossing you. We have eyes on every port."
"Good. Ensure the perimeter guards are doubled tonight regardless," Adrian commanded, his dark eyes scanning the crowded room. "I want absolutely no surprises on Christmas Eve. Trust no one outside this immediate circle."

"Of course," Vincent nodded respectfully, raising his crystal champagne flute. "To a peaceful holiday, Mr. Cross."
Adrian did not raise his glass immediately. He turned his signet ring thoughtfully around his tattooed finger. He had accepted the political necessity of his impending marriage, but a persistent, gnawing instinct told him that something within the walls of his own estate was deeply fractured. His sharp gaze drifted across the salon, looking past the laughing guests and the beautifully wrapped presents, searching for the source of a subtle disruption he could feel but not yet see.
