Chapter 2

The heavy silk curtains framing the tall windows seemed to absorb the suffocating tension radiating from Della as she stood frozen beside the child. Her breath caught in her throat, her delicate cheekbones draining of their natural rosy color. The soft, golden illumination of the room suddenly felt blinding and interrogative.

Cyrus, whose cold, observant eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, instantly noticed the terrified interaction. He watched the way his son flinched, and he saw the dark, unnatural band hidden beneath the boy's crisp shirt collar.

The mafia boss did not move frantically. He turned his head slowly. He looked past his trembling son and locked his gaze directly into Della’s expressive, horrified eyes.

"Della. What’s around Asa’s neck?"

Cyrus’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke with a measured, chilling pause that demanded absolute truth. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the room like a straight razor.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the polished walnut tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid and his son.

Marina, sitting in her champagne velvet chair, stiffened. The golden light caught the sudden pallor of her fair skin as she stared at the boy. She met Cyrus’s cold gaze, forcing her lips into a small, reassuring smile that did not reach her eyes.

"Just a medical device, darling," Marina stated, her American accent dripping with condescending reassurance.

Her eyes frantically searched Cyrus’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests. She needed him to turn away from the boy.

Della held Cyrus’s intense, unyielding gaze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Marina Vale, a woman who concealed vicious cruelty beneath her gentle public manner. But looking into Cyrus's perceptive eyes, Della knew she could not abandon the child.

Her lips trembled slightly as she looked directly at the mafia boss. Cyrus rose slowly from his chair, his towering, broad-shouldered frame moving with predatory grace. He placed himself deliberately between Marina and both Della and Asa, his dark tailored suit acting as a massive, physical shield.

With shaking hands, Della carefully unfastened the heavy plastic buckle at the back of the boy's neck. She pulled the device free, the metal prongs gleaming menacingly under the chandeliers.

"It’s a dog’s shock collar," Della said, her voice clear and devastated.

A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the elite guests.

Asa looked directly at Marina, bypassing his father's protective frame. Moisture gathered rapidly along the boy's lower eyelids, making his eyes shine brilliantly. He spoke quietly, with a profound, confused hurt rather than anger.

"You said Daddy chose it."

Cyrus looked briefly at the collar resting in Della’s hand. He slowly shifted his gaze toward Marina, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. He held Marina’s eyes in a cold, unwavering stare, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel monster trembling beneath. The room descended into absolute, suffocating silence.
