Chapter 11

The transition from the ruined nursery to the subterranean bunker was a tense, heavily guarded procession. Cyrus moved with the terrifying, predatory grace of an apex predator defending its den. He kept Della and Asa tucked securely behind his broad, tailored shoulders, his customized automatic weapon raised and ready. The bright, cinematic lighting of the upper floors was completely extinguished, leaving only the harsh red strobes of the emergency system to paint the marble corridors in a violent hue.
"Boss, the eastern wing is secure. The Vale mercenaries are retreating to the outer perimeter," the security chief reported over the encrypted comms, his voice cracking with adrenaline. "They have an armored transport blocking the main gates. They are dug in."
"Will you hold them at the gates until I arrive?" Cyrus commanded, his volume incredibly low.
"Yes, Mr. Langford. We are laying down suppressing fire."
Cyrus reached the heavy steel blast doors of the panic suite. He keyed his biometric code, and the doors hissed open, revealing a brightly lit, heavily fortified sanctuary beneath the estate. He ushered Della and Asa inside.
"Are you safe here?" Cyrus asked softly, kneeling in front of his trembling son.
"Daddy, don't go," Asa pleaded, clinging to Cyrus's dark suit.
"Would I ever let them take this house from us?" Cyrus asked, gently pulling the boy's hands away. He kissed Asa's forehead, then stood up, his cold, observant eyes locking onto Della. "Will you lock this door behind me, Della? And open it for absolutely no one but me?"
"I will," Della promised, her expressive brows drawn together in fierce determination. "Please be careful, Cyrus."
The use of his first name, spoken with such raw, genuine concern, sent a sharp, electric jolt through his chest.
"I will return," Cyrus swore softly. He stepped out of the bunker, the heavy steel doors sliding shut and locking with a resounding metallic clang.
Cyrus did not head toward the main firefight at the front gates. He utilized the servant's corridors, moving silently through the shadows until he emerged on the western flank of the estate. He slipped into the freezing night air, bypassing the illuminated areas. The Vale mercenaries were focused entirely on the main assault, completely unaware that the most dangerous man in the city was flanking them in the dark.
He reached the edge of the security floodlights. He withdrew a specialized, high-yield explosive charge from his tactical harness.
"Did you believe you could park on my driveway without paying the toll?" Cyrus whispered to the night.
He armed the charge and threw it with perfect, athletic precision. The device sailed through the freezing air, landing directly beneath the fuel tank of the armored transport.

Cyrus turned his back on the vehicle and began walking calmly toward the mansion.
The explosion was catastrophic. The armored transport erupted in a blinding, deafening ball of fire, lifting entirely off its wheels before crashing down in a twisted heap of burning metal. The concussive shockwave shattered the remaining glass in the western wing and threw the Vale mercenaries violently to the ground.
