Chapter 8

The luxurious dining room, with its gold-rimmed porcelain and dying white roses, suddenly felt like a beautifully decorated trap. The flickering candles cast frantic, dancing shadows against the ivory-paneled walls as the reality of an impending mafia war settled over the estate.

“Are all perimeter guards heavily armed and at their posts, Marcus?” Graham asked, his voice perfectly measured, betraying absolutely no panic.

“Yes, Boss. We have twenty men on the walls and snipers on the roof,” Marcus replied, pulling a heavy, suppressed pistol from his coat and checking the magazine. “But the Blake family has numbers. If they mobilize their entire syndicate, they could breach the gates within the hour.”

“Do you believe a mob of angry men can easily breach a fortress built by the Kingsley family?” Graham inquired, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the ornate marble fireplace.

“I don't underestimate desperate men, Graham,” Marcus said grimly. “We need to move you to the safe room in the subterranean vaults. It’s fully reinforced. If they bring heavy ordinance, the upper floors won't hold.”

Nora stood frozen by the velvet chair, her heart-shaped face pale with absolute terror. She had grown up in the city, she knew the stories of mafia wars—the blood in the streets, the collateral damage. She was wearing a maid's uniform, entirely defenseless, trapped in the epicenter of an underworld explosion.

“Mr. Kingsley,” Nora whispered, her voice shaking violently. “I... I should leave. If they breach the house, I will just be in your men's way.”

Graham turned slowly, his cold, observant eyes locking onto her terrified form. The small artistic tattoo on his neck shifted as he tilted his head.

“Do you think I would allow you to walk out into a warzone alone?” Graham asked, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register.

“I am just a maid!” Nora cried out, her composure finally cracking under the immense stress. “They don't care about me! If I slip out the back, I can disappear into the city! You have an empire to defend, you cannot worry about protecting the help!”

Graham crossed the distance between them in three long, powerful strides. He stopped mere inches from her, his towering masculine frame completely dominating her field of vision. He reached out, his tailored sleeve brushing against her arm as he grabbed her hand, his warm, tattooed fingers enveloping her trembling ones.

“Did you not risk your own life to protect me from a lie tonight?” Graham asked quietly, staring intensely into her eyes. “Do you truly believe I am a man who abandons those who prove their loyalty?”

“But I am a liability!” Nora sobbed, a tear slipping down her delicate cheekbone.

“Are you a liability, or are you the only honest thing left in my home?” Graham asked.

He didn't wait for her to process the profound weight of his words. He turned to his underboss, his grip on Nora’s hand remaining firm and uncompromising.

“Marcus, will you escort Nora to the subterranean safe room and remain there to guard the door?” Graham commanded.

Marcus frowned, his heavily scarred face pulling tight. “Boss, I need to be up here with you. You can't lead the defense alone.”

“Did I ask for your tactical advice, Marcus, or did I give you a direct order?” Graham asked, his voice turning to absolute ice.

Marcus swallowed hard, nodding sharply. “Understood, Boss. Come with me, Nora.”

Nora looked up at Graham, her eyes wide with fear and a sudden, heartbreaking realization that this terrifying man was willing to risk everything for her.

“Are you not coming with us?” Nora asked, her voice cracking.

“Would I hide in a vault while enemies stand on my front lawn?” Graham asked, releasing her hand and pulling a heavy firearm from the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket.
