Chapter 1

Cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the grand dining room. It was an engagement dinner that rivaled the opulence of royalty, set inside the sprawling mansion of Graham Kingsley. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off the pristine white roses, crystal stemware, and gold-rimmed porcelain that adorned the polished walnut tables. Dozens of guests, ranging from ruthless underworld capos to corrupt politicians, sat in champagne velvet chairs. The heavy silk curtains were drawn tight against the night, completing the luxurious interior and keeping the secrets of the mafia elite safely contained within. Soft reflected light clearly illuminated the entire room and every face.
Graham stood beside his chair at the head of the table, a man who possessed a lethal, magnetic authority. Handsome as a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit to perfection. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jaw were shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, observant eyes scanned the room, missing absolutely nothing. The refined tattoos on his hands and fingers, generously spaced, caught the light whenever he adjusted his wristwatch or touched his family signet ring.
Beside him stood Adrienne Blake, his fiancée. She was draped in an elegant, empire-waisted satin evening gown with a flowing skirt that gathered beautifully around her feet. Diamond earrings flashed at her neck, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger. Beneath her gown, secured by a heavy waist strap, was a false pregnancy belly. She played the role of the glowing, expectant mother perfectly, resting her hand on the prosthetic curve.
“You must be exhausted, Adrienne,” a senator’s wife remarked from down the table, raising her crystal glass. “Carrying a child is such a tremendous burden, but you look absolutely radiant tonight.”
“Oh, it is a small price to pay,” Adrienne replied, offering a breathless, graceful laugh. “Our little one is quite active this evening. Graham has been so incredibly protective of us both.”
Graham turned his head slightly, his small artistic neck tattoo shifting above his collar. He looked at Adrienne, his expression entirely unreadable. “Are you feeling fatigued, Adrienne?”
“Just a little, my love,” she murmured, leaning into his arm. “But I wouldn't miss this celebration for the world.”
“Would you prefer to retire early?” Graham asked, his voice deep, quiet, and deliberate.
“No, I am perfectly fine,” Adrienne insisted, her smile tightening just a fraction.
From the shadows of the arched doorway, Nora Ellis emerged. Beautiful like a movie star, the young housemaid possessed a softly tapered face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her hair was pinned into a loose, elegant French twist. She moved with slender, graceful proportions, wearing a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her white apron was neatly tied, complementing her pristine white collar and cuffs. Her hands trembled slightly as she carried a silver tray of desserts.
Nora approached the head of the table. She knew the truth. She knew the belly was silicone and straps. And Adrienne knew that she knew.
“Dessert, Miss Blake?” Nora whispered, her voice barely audible over the chatter.
As Nora set down Adrienne’s gold-rimmed dessert plate, a subtle, sharp snap echoed beneath the satin gown. The prosthetic’s waist strap had come loose. Without the heavy band to secure it, the false belly slid rapidly beneath the flowing skirt, dropping heavily onto the hardwood floor and rolling to a stop right beside Adrienne's polished shoe.

Nora gasped, her instincts overriding her fear, and she immediately reached down toward it.
Adrienne froze. She fixed the maid with a sharp, murderous warning look, her manicured hand gripping the edge of the walnut table. She spoke under her breath, a venomous hiss meant only for Nora. “Leave it.”
