Chapter 10

The hidden passage behind the library was narrow, cold, and smelled of ancient dust, a stark contrast to the luxurious, gilded corridors of the mansion above. Graham moved with relentless, lethal precision, keeping Nora securely tucked behind his broad shoulders as they navigated the pitch-black tunnel. The muffled, heavy thuds of explosions and relentless gunfire vibrated through the stone walls, a constant reminder that the Kingsley empire was fighting for its very survival above them.
Marcus brought up the rear, his breathing heavy as he kept his weapon trained on the darkness behind them, ensuring they weren't followed.
They finally reached a heavy steel door at the end of the passage. Graham keyed in a biometric code on the keypad, and the massive deadbolts retracted with a loud, mechanical clank. He pushed the door open, ushering Nora and Marcus into the subterranean command bunker.
The room was bathed in stark, fluorescent light. Banks of monitors displayed the chaotic security feeds from around the estate. The mansion was severely damaged, but Graham’s men were holding the perimeter, violently repelling the Blake family's assault.
Nora collapsed onto a metal folding chair, her slender proportions trembling uncontrollably. Her sophisticated black maid dress was ruined, covered in plaster and soot, and her loose French twist had completely fallen out, leaving her hair tumbling wildly over her shoulders. She buried her face in her hands, trying to slow her frantic breathing.
Graham walked over to a steel table, calmly ejecting the spent magazine from his weapon and sliding a fresh one into the grip. His tailored vest was dusted with debris, but his angular face remained an impenetrable mask of cold authority. He looked at the monitors, assessing the battlefield, before turning his observant eyes to Nora.
He walked over to her, his polished leather shoes making a soft sound against the concrete floor. He knelt in front of her, ignoring the chaos on the screens, bringing himself down to her eye level.
“Are you injured, Nora?” Graham asked, his deep, measured voice offering the only anchor of sanity in the room.
Nora slowly lowered her hands, looking at the terrifyingly handsome mafia boss. She shook her head. “No, sir. I am unharmed. But... your home. Your men. Everything is burning because of me.”
“Do you truly believe a war over a false heir and a broken alliance is your fault?” Graham asked gently. He reached out, his tattooed fingers carefully wiping a smudge of soot from her delicate cheekbone. “Did you not simply force the poison into the light before it could kill me?”
Nora swallowed hard, tears welling in her eyes once more. “What happens now? Adrienne is locked in the basement, her family is trying to kill you, and I... I am trapped in a bunker with the head of the mafia.”
Graham’s hand lingered on her cheek, his thumb softly brushing her skin. The proximity was intoxicating, the danger outside entirely forgotten in the gravitational pull of his intense, unwavering stare. He was a ruthless killer, a warlord of the underworld, yet he looked at her with a dark, profound reverence that took her breath away.
“Do you think the Blake family will survive the night after attacking my home?” Graham inquired softly, a chilling promise of impending slaughter laced in his quiet tone.
May you like
He slowly stood up, his powerful, masculine frame towering over her once more. The war above was far from over, and the consequences of this night would echo through the city's underworld for years to come.
“Are you ready for the life that comes after we walk out of this room, Nora?” Graham asked.
