Chapter 9

Lydia’s breath hitched in her throat. The imposing frame of the mafia boss filled her vision. The warm golden light of the bedroom caught the fine lines framing his perceptive eyes, revealing a depth of character she had never fully appreciated.
"What kind of change, Adrian?" Lydia asked, her heart racing against her ribs.
"Would you prefer to assume the role of my wife, answering to no one in this house but me?" Adrian asked.
Lydia stared at him, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the offer. It was a position of high respect and immense trust, offering security that far exceeded her role as a housemaid. It meant she would no longer be invisible; she would be a central figure in the life of the mafia boss.
"Are you serious?" Lydia asked, a radiant, beautiful, tearful smile breaking across her fair, rosy face.
"Have I ever joked about the people under my protection?" Adrian asked, stopping just inches from her.
"I would be honored," Lydia whispered.
"Will you trust me to keep you safe when the war begins tonight?" Adrian asked, his voice a low, gravelly promise.
"Always," Lydia replied without hesitation.
Adrian raised his tattooed hand, his knuckles gently brushing against her cheek again. It was a fleeting, electric touch that promised a future far more complicated than employer and employee. The quiet mutual affection they had always shared was finally allowed to breathe.
Before either could speak again, the quiet of the master suite was broken by the distant, high-pitched wail of the estate’s security sirens. The red emergency strobe lights flickered outside the tall windows, casting a bloody, chaotic glow over the sprawling grounds.
Lydia gasped, instinctively grabbing Adrian's hand as the alarms wailed.
Adrian’s demeanor changed in a microsecond. The gentle protector vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, lethal mafia king. His powerful shoulders squared, and his observant eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
He strode quickly to a reinforced steel safe embedded in the wall paneling and punched in a rapid code.
"Are the perimeter guards engaging hostiles?" Adrian demanded into a secure radio sitting inside the safe.
"Boss!" Marcus’s frantic voice crackled back over the speaker. "The Shaw syndicate didn't wait for morning! They hit the eastern service gates with heavy explosives! We have multiple hostiles on the grounds!"
"Are the interior blast doors engaged?" Adrian asked, remaining terrifyingly calm despite the adrenaline surging through his veins.
"Engaging now, sir! But they have military-grade armor. We are returning fire, but they are pushing hard toward the family wing!" the operative shouted over his radio.
"Will you hold the grand foyer until I arrive?" Adrian asked.
"We will hold the line, Mr. Kensington!"
Adrian released the radio button. He reached into the safe, his tattooed hands moving with practiced, lethal precision, and pulled out a heavy, customized automatic weapon. He turned and looked at Lydia. She was sitting up in bed, her expressive eyes wide with fear, yet entirely resolute.
"Are you prepared to lock these heavy oak doors behind me?" Adrian asked, walking back toward her.
"Are you leaving me here?" Lydia cried out, panic finally lacing her American accent. "They have an army, Adrian!"
"Will you survive running through a crossfire if I attempt to move you now?" Adrian asked bluntly, his imposing frame blocking the exit to the hallway.
"I can't just stay here and listen to them come for you!" Lydia pleaded, her hands trembling on the duvet.

Adrian stared at the beautiful woman before him. She possessed a profound, quiet courage that completely eclipsed the shallow, venomous nature of the elites he normally dealt with. She was willing to stand in a gunfight rather than wait in the dark.
"Are you willing to follow my exact orders to keep yourself alive?" Adrian asked, his cold eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire.
