Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall ivory candles flickering inside their ornate brass candelabras seemed to be the only things moving in the entire, luminous space. The clear, clean lighting left absolutely no shadows for Lucinda’s cruelty to hide within.

Lydia met Adrian’s intense, unyielding gaze, struggling immensely to maintain her composure. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Lucinda Shaw, a woman whose family commanded a powerful syndicate of their own. But looking into Adrian's perceptive eyes, feeling the profound loss of their child carving a hollow space in her chest, Lydia knew she could not lie to him.

Her inner brows lifted helplessly in an expression of profound, devastating grief. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, making her beautiful eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers.

She took a shallow, shuddering breath, her voice remaining thin and quiet in the silent room.

"Lucinda pushed me. Our baby's gone."

The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests. The revelation of the mafia boss's secret affair with a servant was scandalous enough; the revelation of a murdered heir at the hands of the fiancée was a catastrophic violation of syndicate law.

Adrian froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching violently in his broad chest. His cold eyes looked directly at Lydia, holding a shallow breath as the absolute, crushing magnitude of the loss registered in his mind. The child he had never known about had been brutally taken from him in his own home.

Slowly, deliberately, Adrian’s heavily tattooed hand entered the edge of the frame. He reached out and gently, supportively grasped Lydia’s forearm, an uncharacteristically tender and public display of the quiet mutual affection they shared. The warmth of his touch was the only thing keeping her standing.

Before anyone could process the sheer magnitude of the accusation, Lucinda reacted. The carefully polished, reassuring half-smile vanished instantly from her face, replaced by a mask of cold, defensive fury.

Lucinda looked directly at Adrian, her fair, rosy skin flushing with anger. She met his gaze with defensive, resentful certainty, attempting to justify the murder by appealing to the rigid social structures of the underworld.

"A maid can't carry your heir," Lucinda stated flatly.

The socialite's words echoed coldly off the carved marble fireplace, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty hidden beneath her satin gown. She felt she had done the syndicate a favor by eliminating the illegitimate child.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Adrian’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his gaze moving away from the broken woman holding his hand toward Lucinda, followed by a slow, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened until the bone threatened to snap under the pressure, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.

He held Lucinda’s eyes in a cold, furious, and unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her justifications, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath. Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Adrian Kensington.
