Chapter 7

The profound, ringing silence of the grand dining room settled heavily over the remaining two figures. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty crystal wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt like a war room.

Adrian stood silently for a moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a slow, controlled breath. The betrayal was absolute, the upcoming syndicate war with Lucinda’s father inevitable, but the immediate, toxic sickness within his home had been surgically removed. Now, he had to secure the woman he loved.

He turned his body, his polished leather shoes pivoting seamlessly on the cream marble floors, and looked down at Lydia.

She was leaning heavily against him, her hands gripping the lapels of his dark suit. The sophisticated black maid dress contrasted sharply with her extreme pallor. She was crying softly, the adrenaline leaving her body and allowing the physical trauma of the fall to return in full force.

Adrian didn't ask another question. He simply leaned down, sliding one powerful arm behind her knees and the other around her back, lifting her fragile form effortlessly against his chest.

"Adrian, I can walk," Lydia whispered weakly, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Would I ever let you walk when you are in pain?" Adrian asked, his deep voice a low, reassuring rumble against her ear.

He carried her out of the luminous dining room through a discrete service door. He navigated the ivory-paneled corridors of the mansion, bypassing the staff quarters entirely. Instead, Adrian guided himself up the sweeping marble staircase toward the secure, heavily guarded family wing. The warm golden hues of the wall sconces illuminated his path, a stark contrast to the dark, violent reality of the impending mafia war.

He reached the doors to the massive, luxurious master suite. The heavy deadbolts clicked as he unlocked them, stepping into the room and kicking the door shut behind him.

He gently laid Lydia down on the plush, king-sized bed, pulling the thick, expensive duvet up to her chin. The roaring marble fireplace in the corner of the room immediately began to cast a healing, elegant warmth over her pale skin.

"Will you rest now, Lydia?" Adrian asked, sitting on the edge of the mattress and gently stroking her hair.

"Are you going to leave me?" Lydia asked, her expressive eyes searching for reassurance.

"Would I ever leave you after what you endured?" Adrian asked, reaching out to gently cup her cheek.

Lydia sniffled, leaning into his large, tattooed hand. "No."

"Are you a brave woman?" Adrian asked, his thumb brushing away a tear.

"I tried to be," Lydia whispered, her small chin trembling.

Adrian shifted his gaze, his cold, perceptive eyes scanning her delicate features. She had risked her job, her physical safety, and her life by exposing the murder and standing against the fiancée of a mafia boss. The fierce loyalty and profound mutual affection she had displayed was a rare, precious commodity in Adrian's dark, violent world.

"Will you let the doctor examine you while I make my preparations?" Adrian asked, holding her gaze with an intensity that sent a sudden, warm flutter through Lydia’s chest despite the pain.

"Yes, Adrian," Lydia replied, her rosy cheeks flushing slightly under his intense focus.

Adrian stood up, walking toward the door to summon his medical team. The impending war with the Shaw syndicate loomed over him, but for the first time in his life, his house finally felt like a home he was willing to burn the city down to protect.

"Shall we prepare for what comes next?" Adrian asked the empty room, turning to begin his preparations for absolute war.
