Chapter 3

The innocent, toddler-phrased confession shattered the fragile hesitation keeping Sophie anchored in place. She hugged Toby tightly, her own rosy cheeks flushed with absolute terror. She did not fully understand the depths of the cruelty possessed by the adults in this room, but she knew that Bianca was a viper waiting to strike, and an elderly woman was suffering in the dark.

"Toby, sweetie, stay right here with your snowman," Sophie whispered urgently, pressing a trembling kiss to his soft curls. "I have to go look at the picture."

Sophie stood up, abandoning her silver tray on the polished walnut console. The cascading crystal chandeliers seemed to spotlight her as she walked deliberately toward the massive, heavy portrait beside the towering Christmas tree. The painting was mounted on a concealed wall rail, designed to hide the estate's old, narrow dressing room.

As Sophie approached the wall, a faint, rhythmic knocking echoed from behind the canvas. It was a weak, desperate sound, barely audible over the festive music, but to Sophie, it was deafening.

She reached out, her hands shaking, and grasped the ornate gilded frame of the portrait.

Before she could pull it, Toby waddled over, his little brown boots squeaking slightly on the marble floor. He looked at the wall, then turned his head, spotting Bianca walking toward them. The toddler raised his small hand, pointing directly at the concealed door, his face lighting up with innocent recognition.

"Auntie," Toby called out cheerfully, his voice ringing clearly over the ambient noise of the nearby guests. "Nana’s ghost is knocking!"

The words dropped into the grand salon like a live grenade. The ambient noise of the nearby conversations suddenly felt muted, distant. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed.

Gideon Hale, who had been listening quietly to his capos mere feet away, instantly stopped breathing. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second. He turned his head sharply, his dark, sweeping gaze moving from his son's innocent face directly to the portrait.

He moved with preternatural speed, crossing the polished marble floor in three massive, predatory strides. His tailored dark three-piece suit cut a formidable silhouette through the crowded room as he approached the Christmas tree from the side.

Sophie, fueled by pure adrenaline, began sliding the heavy portrait sideways along its concealed wall rail. The canvas shifted smoothly, exposing the hidden alcove behind it.
