Chapter 10

Once Eleanor and Toby were settled, Gideon gestured for Sophie to follow him toward the adjacent private sitting room. They stepped through the archway, the heavy velvet drapes muffling the sounds of the mansion. The natural, cinematic lighting of the sitting room highlighted the sheer exhaustion in Sophie's delicate features. She kept her head slightly bowed, maintaining the submissive posture expected of a maid, but Gideon stepped directly into her line of sight, forcing her to look up.

"Why didn't you tell me, Sophie?" Gideon asked, his voice a low, controlled murmur. "When you saw her manipulating the portrait, why didn't you come to me?"

Sophie met his gaze, her expressive eyes shining with unshed tears. "Because I know what the Drake alliance means to your syndicate, Mr. Hale. If I complained, I knew you would be forced to reprimand her based only on a maid's word. I didn't want to be the reason you went to war. I had to prove it."

Gideon studied her face, the fair, rosy skin pale with the trauma she had endured alone. He felt a profound, burning disgust for his own blindness. In a world full of hardened killers and corrupt politicians, this young woman possessed more integrity and loyalty than his entire inner circle combined.

"You endured unimaginable fear to protect my family," Gideon said slowly, the artistic tattoos on his hands flexing as he clenched his fists. "I owe you a debt I can never fully repay."

"You don't owe me anything, sir," Sophie whispered, her breath hitching slightly under his intense scrutiny. "I just wanted your mother to be safe. And I wanted Toby to feel loved."

"I owe you everything," Gideon corrected, taking a slow step closer. He reached out with his hand, the negative space tattoos stark against the pristine white collar of her maid uniform. He didn't touch her, but his hand hovered protectively near her cheek. "You are no longer a maid in this house, Sophie. From this moment on, you are under my direct, personal protection. Whatever you need, whatever you want, you have it."

Sophie’s eyes widened in shock, her lips parting slightly. "Sir, I... I don't know what to say."

"Say you will stay," Gideon said, his tone shifting from the calculated focus of a mafia boss to a deeply vulnerable, quiet plea.

"Stay?" Sophie whispered.

"I cannot trust anyone else with my son or my mother," Gideon explained, his dark eyes burning into hers. "And... I cannot imagine this house without you in it. I have been blind, Sophie. But I see you now. I see everything you have done for us."

Sophie’s heart hammered against her ribs. The quiet, unspoken affection she had harbored for him for months was suddenly being acknowledged, dragged into the bright light of reality.

"I will stay, Gideon," Sophie whispered, dropping his formal title for the first time.

Gideon let out a slow, ragged exhale. He finally closed the distance, his tattooed hand gently cupping her face. The intimacy of the moment was overwhelming, a quiet sanctuary built in the middle of a warzone.

But before he could lean in, a frantic, heavy pounding echoed from the hallway outside the master suite.

The romantic vulnerability vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating mask of the apex predator. Gideon’s hand dropped from Sophie’s face, moving swiftly to the heavy pistol holstered beneath his tailored suit jacket. He positioned his broad shoulders between Sophie and the doorway, his angular face setting into a mask of pure, lethal authority.

"Enter," Gideon commanded.

The heavy oak door swung open. A scarred lead enforcer stepped into the room, pale and grim under the warm lighting.

"Boss, we have a massive problem," the enforcer reported, catching his breath. "Bianca’s father knows. A convoy of heavily armored, unmarked vehicles has breached the southern gates. The Drake family is heavily armed, and they are moving aggressively toward the main house."

Gideon’s eyes darkened to pitch. The immediate threat of Bianca was neutralized, but the war she had promised had arrived at his doorstep. He looked at Sophie, the protective instinct surging through his veins with terrifying force. The bright, airy world he wanted to build with her was currently under siege.

"Lock the heavy steel security door from the inside," Gideon commanded Sophie, his voice absolute. "Do not come out until I tell you it is safe. I am going to slaughter every man who steps foot on my property tonight."

Gideon turned and strode out of the suite, drawing his weapon, ready to unleash hell upon the invaders to protect the family he had finally claimed.
