Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Vance empire began to violently fracture.
Malcolm’s expression remained an unreadable mask of masculine stone. He did not return Seraphina's smile. He did not accept her smooth, practiced reassurance.
Nell held Malcolm’s intense, unyielding gaze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Seraphina Blake, a woman whose family commanded a powerful syndicate of their own. But looking into Malcolm's perceptive eyes, Nell knew that allowing a child to be thrown out into the night was a sin she could not abide.
Her lips trembled slightly, fighting the overwhelming pressure of the silent room. She swallowed hard, a visible, painful gulp in her throat, trying to force moisture into her dry mouth.
"Seraphina packed the suitcase," Nell said.
The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests.
Malcolm moved with lethal fluidity. He rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair, drawing it out slightly. He placed his towering, broad-shouldered frame deliberately between Seraphina and both his son and the housemaid. His dark tailored suit acted as a massive, physical shield, cutting off the socialite's line of sight to the trembling boy. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his knuckles on the edge of the polished walnut table.
Seraphina gripped the edge of the table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand began to shake violently. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the housemaid a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming tension radiating from the man standing opposite her.
Before Seraphina could formulate a defense, a small voice broke the tableau.
Lucas, still standing rigidly in his small dinner jacket, slowly turned his head. The little boy’s fair cheeks were pale, and his small shoulders were drawn inward defensively. He looked directly at Seraphina, bypassing his father's protective frame.
Tears gathered rapidly along Lucas’s lower eyelids, making his eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers. Despite his profound fear, the seven-year-old’s voice remained small, clear, and devastatingly steady.
"You said Daddy didn't want me," Lucas said.
The childish American accent sliced through the heavy silence, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty of the woman in the sculpted satin gown.
Malcolm froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His cold eyes rested briefly on Lucas for one silent, agonizing beat as the reality of the psychological torture inflicted upon his son cemented itself in his mind.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Malcolm’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his gaze moving first toward Seraphina, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.
He held Seraphina’s eyes in a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.
