Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the gilded wall panels of the mansion’s grand dining hall. It was a space designed to project absolute power and refined elegance, anchored by a massive, carved marble fireplace that crackled with a steady, comforting blaze. The luxurious interior was heavily perfumed with the scent of white roses, meticulously arranged between tall ivory candles glowing in heavy silver candelabras. The polished walnut dining table stretched across the room, surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs. The generous illumination revealed every face in the room, highlighting the fair, rosy skin and crisp American accents of the fifty elite guests in attendance.
At the head of the room sat Malcolm Vance. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classic leading man. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though several loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. Cold, observant eyes surveyed the room. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous spacing, contrasting with the heavy family signet ring and the expensive wristwatch he wore. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The evening is an absolute triumph, isn't it, Senator?" a wealthy politician remarked, raising his crystal stemware toward the head table. "The Vance and Blake families uniting will bring unprecedented peace to this city."
Malcolm stared at his crystal glass, his face an unreadable mask. He turned his head slightly, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space. "Do you believe peace is ever truly bought with champagne, Senator?"
The politician chuckled nervously at the mafia boss's question, taking a quick sip of his wine.
To Malcolm’s left sat his thirty-three-year-old fiancée, Seraphina Blake. She was a vision in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Diamond earrings caught the golden light, matching the massive engagement ring that rested heavily on her finger. She possessed elegant manners and a carefully maintained public smile, chatting effortlessly with the surrounding guests.
Moving gracefully near the edge of the dining hall was Nell Rowan. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was exceptionally beautiful, with a softly oval face, delicate cheekbones, expressive brows, and fair, rosy skin. Her hair was immaculately arranged in a soft low bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress featuring a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, a crisp white collar, and matching cuffs completed her uniform.

Nell had just slipped out of the kitchen through the service entrance. There, sitting quietly in the shadows on a heavy wooden bench, was seven-year-old Lucas Vance, Malcolm’s son. His mother had died two years ago, a loss that still hung heavy over the boy. He was dressed in a small dinner jacket with a slightly crooked bow tie. Resting against his knees was a worn leather suitcase.
Nell’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She took the boy's hand and led him out of the shadows, walking him directly into the bright, airy warmth of the crowded engagement dinner.
