Chapter 2

The heavy silk curtains framing the tall windows seemed to absorb the suffocating tension radiating from Nell as she approached the head table. Her footsteps were virtually silent on the thick Persian rug, her slender, graceful proportions moving with a practiced, deliberate efficiency.

"Make sure the wine glasses are completely full, Nell," the head butler murmured as she passed him, assuming she was returning to serve.

Nell did not answer him. She walked straight past the serving carts, her hand firmly holding Lucas's small fingers. She stopped directly beside Malcolm’s chair.

Lucas stood rigidly, clutching the worn leather suitcase against his knees. The boy’s fair skin was exceptionally pale, his rosy cheeks devoid of color. He looked incredibly small and fragile amidst the towering figures of the underworld elite.

Nell leaned down gracefully. With trembling fingers, she reached out and gently straightened Lucas’s slightly crooked bow tie. The gesture was intimate and deeply maternal, a stark contrast to the cold, formal environment of the engagement dinner.

Malcolm, whose cold, observant eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, instantly noticed the arrival of his son and the housemaid. He watched Nell's gentle adjustment of the bow tie, and then his sharp gaze dropped. He saw the worn leather suitcase resting against the boy's small legs.

The mafia boss did not move frantically. He turned his head slowly. He looked past his son and locked his gaze directly into Nell’s expressive eyes.

"Nell. Why is Lucas leaving?"

Malcolm’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke exclusively in questions, an interrogative cadence that demanded absolute truth. He allowed a measured, chilling pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the room like a straight razor.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the long tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid and his son.

Seraphina, sitting in her champagne velvet chair, stiffened. Her fingers tightened fiercely around the stem of her champagne flute. The golden light caught the sudden pallor of her fair skin as she stared at the boy she had thought she had secretly removed from the equation. She met Malcolm’s cold gaze, forcing her lips into a small, reassuring smile that did not quite reach her eyes.

"Lucas asked to leave, darling," Seraphina stated, her American accent dripping with condescending reassurance.

Her eyes frantically searched Malcolm’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests. She needed him to turn away from the suitcase.
