Chapter 4

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Adriana.

The bright, clear lighting illuminated every detail of her sculpted beauty—the flawless, rosy skin, the sharp contour of her cheekbones, and the brilliant flash of her diamond earrings.

Adriana looked directly at Matteo, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm. She could not allow the maid to speak.

“She bumped into the table.”

Adriana delivered the words with a smooth, casually certain tone. Her American accent was perfectly pitched, carrying a light, dismissive air as if she were excusing the clumsy behavior of a toddler. She offered a faint, reassuring smile, leaning slightly forward in her sculpted satin gown to command the intimacy of the moment.

Her eyes carefully and frantically searched Matteo's angular face for any sign of acceptance, any indication that he had bought her casual deflection. She waited for him to nod, to dismiss the maid and return the focus to his welcome-home celebration.

Only after speaking, believing she had solidified the narrative, did Adriana shift her gaze. She shot Cecily a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent, absolute promise of severe retaliation if the housemaid dared to contradict her lie.

Matteo did not smile back. He did not nod. The extremely short stubble on his jawline seemed to harden into absolute granite.

He moved.

He did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply rose from his champagne velvet chair with a fluid, terrifying masculine grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. In one deliberate, protective motion, Matteo placed his towering frame entirely between Adriana and both Cecily and his young son.

He acted as an impenetrable physical wall, shielding his blood and the woman who had suffered to protect him.

"Does a polished walnut table possess the height required to strike a grown woman in the face, Adriana?" Matteo asked. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the methodical ticking of a metronome.

Adriana’s smile tightened slightly at the corners, but she maintained her posture. "Matteo, darling, please. The staff is always rushing about. They are clumsy. She probably hit the edge of a serving cart in the kitchens. It is a trivial matter."

"Is violence within my home considered a trivial matter simply because it happens to a servant?" Matteo inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes locking onto her with terrifying intensity.

"You are making a spectacle of this!" Adriana hissed, her voice lowering slightly, attempting to manage the situation before it escalated into a public humiliation. "I am simply trying to keep the evening moving smoothly!"

"Does a smooth evening require the manufacturing of convenient lies to hide the blood spilled in my corridors?" Matteo questioned, his gaze remaining entirely unyielding.
