Chapter 1

The welcome-home dinner was a spectacle of impossible radiance, a masterclass in bright, airy, luminous elegance. Above the long, polished walnut dining table, cascading crystal chandeliers spread a soft, elegant warmth that bathed the entire room in a continuous golden glow. There were no heavy shadows here, no muddy orange tints or dark, dull corners to conceal secrets. The lighting was clean, clear, and perfectly balanced, a slightly warm white luminescence that clearly revealed every corner of the vast space. Carved ivory-paneled walls and gilded ceiling moldings reflected the flickering flames of tall ivory candles, which burned steadily inside silver candelabras nestled between low, lush arrangements of white roses. Champagne velvet chairs surrounded the tables, occupied by the elite of the American underworld. Every guest possessed fair, rosy skin and spoke with crisp, melodic American accents, their laughter mingling with the clinking of crystal stemware.

At the head of this breathtaking display of wealth sat Matteo Crowne. At forty-five, the Mafia boss was a man of staggering, movie-star-handsome masculinity. His broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit with an effortless, predatory grace. He possessed an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell over his forehead, offering a deceptive softness to his otherwise cold, perceptive eyes. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the light alongside his luxury wristwatch and the refined artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers. The ink was meticulously designed with generous negative space, matching a small, elegant neck tattoo visible above his pristine white collar.

"The evening is an absolute triumph, Matteo," a senior capo remarked, leaning in slightly from the adjacent seat. "The family is overjoyed to have you back in the city."

Matteo did not return the capo's smile. His cold eyes tracked the movements of the room, analyzing the flow of the evening with calculating precision.

"Do you believe my return is cause for celebration, or simply a reason for the ambitious to recalculate their loyalties?" Matteo asked. His voice was incredibly deep and low, punctuated by measured, controlled pauses that demanded absolute attention.

Sitting directly opposite him was Adriana Voss. At thirty-three, she was the picture of aristocratic perfection in a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her fair, rosy curves. Diamond earrings caught the golden light, matching the prominent oval diamond engagement ring on her finger.

"Matteo, darling, you are too cynical tonight," Adriana laughed smoothly, her voice polished and confident. "Everyone here is simply thrilled to see you. We wanted an atmosphere that felt entirely luminous and joyful. Everything must be flawless for your return."

"Does a flawless surface guarantee the structural integrity of the house it covers, Adriana?" Matteo inquired, his gaze sweeping slowly over the assembled guests before settling on the empty chair beside him.

His seven-year-old son, Miles, was absent from the table. The boy was supposed to be seated next to his father, dressed in his small dinner suit. Matteo’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. The golden warmth of the room felt suddenly oppressive, and the scent of the white roses cloying. He reached for his crystal water goblet, his eyes scanning the heavy silk curtains for his heir.
