Chapter 3

The continuous, muted clatter of silver cutlery against porcelain plates provided a rhythmic backdrop to the elegant dinner party, completely oblivious to the silent crisis erupting at the head of the table.

Matteo did not move his powerful shoulders. He simply stared at the bruise on the housemaid's cheek, his heavily tattooed hands resting completely still on either side of his plate. The generous negative space of the ink was clearly visible under the warm, golden chandelier light.

He slowly turned his head. The loose strands of slightly wavy hair falling over his forehead cast no shadows in the bright, luminous room, but the sheer gravity of his presence seemed to darken the space immediately surrounding him. He shifted his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from his son and looked directly into Cecily’s eyes.

He waited in absolute silence for Cecily to return the gaze, demanding her full, undivided attention.

Cecily swallowed hard, the muscles in her throat contracting visibly beneath the crisp white collar of her maid dress. She was entirely exposed beneath the bright, golden glow, trapped between the man who owned the city and the woman who was about to marry him.

She forced herself to look up. She met Matteo’s intense, unyielding stare.

“Cecily. Who hurt your cheek?”

Matteo’s voice was deep, low, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water. The measured pause before his inquiry acted like a physical shockwave.

Instantly, every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating. Silver cutlery froze halfway to porcelain plates. The melodic hum of polite, American-accented conversations died completely, replaced by a deafening, ringing silence. Dozens of faces turned toward the head of the table, their attention captured by the sudden, terrifying shift in the Mafia boss's demeanor.

Cecily’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She kept her fingers gently intertwined with Miles's small hand, drawing strength from the little boy. If she spoke the truth, Adriana would undoubtedly try to destroy her. But looking into Matteo Crowne's eyes, Cecily realized that lying to him carried a far more absolute, fatal consequence.

Before Cecily could part her lips to speak the dangerous truth, the woman standing across the table moved to intercept the narrative.

Adriana Voss realized the situation was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp. She needed to immediately reassert her control and paint the injury as a trivial, clumsy accident, lest her cruelty be exposed to the entire syndicate.
