Chapter 1

The expansive dressing room of the Vaughn estate was bathed in brilliant, natural cinematic lighting. Crisp, pure white sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, completely devoid of any harsh yellow tint or warm orange cast. The pristine illumination highlighted the bright, vibrant colors of the room—the gleaming ivory marble floors, the plush azure seating, and the perfectly organized rows of designer fashion.
In the center of this flawless space, a grotesque scene was quietly unfolding.
Three-year-old Sofia knelt on the cold, hard marble. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with a deep, humiliating heat. Instead of her usual vibrant play clothes, the toddler had been forced into a stiff, humiliatingly small black-and-white maid uniform, complete with a starched white apron, uncomfortable white tights, and plain black flats. Her tiny hands, usually clutching toys or picture books, were stained black, trembling as she gripped a heavy shoe-polishing cloth.
Sitting above her on a polished wooden chair was Veronica Hayes. At thirty-four, Veronica was a vision of high-society elegance, wearing a breathtaking white designer dress that draped perfectly over her slender frame. A massive, flawless diamond engagement ring sparkled on her left hand, complemented by matching heavy diamond jewelry at her throat. Her fair, rosy skin was powdered to perfection, her American accent dripping with an undeniable, toxic arrogance.
"You missed a spot on the heel, Sofia," Veronica commanded, her voice sharp and condescending.
"I'm trying, Veronica," the three-year-old whispered, her little voice breaking. A heavy tear slipped down her rosy cheek, cutting a clean line through a smudge of black shoe polish. "My fingers hurt."
"I did not ask for your complaints," Veronica sneered, adjusting her posture on the wooden chair. She leaned forward, a cruel smirk twisting her beautiful features.
Without a shred of hesitation, Veronica pressed the pointed toe of her expensive designer shoe closer, pushing it aggressively against Sofia’s tiny, trembling hand.
"Ouch! Please stop," Sofia whimpered, trying to pull her hand back, but Veronica only pressed harder, trapping the child's fingers against the wooden shoe-polishing stool.
"You need to learn your place in this house before the wedding," Veronica mocked cruelly, looking down at the crying toddler with absolute disdain. "Your mother was a nobody. You are nothing but a complication. A servant’s child belongs on her knees."
"I want my daddy," Sofia sobbed, the tears falling freely now, splashing onto the pristine white apron she had been forced to wear.

"Your daddy is going to be my husband," Veronica laughed, the sound cold and hollow in the bright, cinematic room. "And once we are married, you will be spending a lot more time in the laundry room. Now, finish polishing my shoe, or you won't get any dinner tonight."
Sofia sniffled, her tiny shoulders shaking with silent, helpless sobs. She raised the polishing cloth again, her spirit entirely crushed beneath the oppressive cruelty of the woman she was supposed to call her new mother.
