Chapter 8

Alexander’s private study was a large, imposing room located on the ground floor of the estate. Unlike the rest of the house, the heavy velvet curtains were partially drawn, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany furniture, though the natural light still fought its way in, completely devoid of any yellow tint.

Alexander sat behind his massive desk. He had not changed his ruined dress shirt; the black shoe polish smeared across his chest served as a dark, physical reminder of the betrayal. He sat perfectly still, his tattooed hands resting flat on the polished wood.

The heavy double doors opened. Two bodyguards marched into the room, flanking a terrified, middle-aged woman in a crisp black-and-white housekeeper’s uniform. Martha. Her fair, rosy face was completely drained of color, her hands trembling violently as she was forced to stand before the desk.

"Mr. Vaughn, I... I didn't know you were home," Martha stammered, her voice shaking.

Alexander did not speak immediately. He utilized his signature, terrifying silence, letting the tension in the room build until it was suffocating. He slowly leaned back in his leather chair, his cold, intimidating eyes dissecting the woman standing before him.

"You have worked in this house for five years, Martha," Alexander finally said. His deep, raspy voice was barely above a whisper. He spoke with controlled, agonizing pauses. "You are paid exceptionally well. You are protected."

"Yes, sir. You have been very generous," Martha wept, tears spilling over her cheeks.

"Then why," Alexander asked, his voice dropping another octave, "did I find my three-year-old daughter dressed in a servant’s uniform, polishing the shoes of a guest?"

Martha gasped, her knees nearly buckling. She looked frantically at the two bodyguards, but they offered no sympathy.

"She... Miss Hayes ordered it!" Martha cried out in a desperate, panicked rush. "She told me that she was going to be your wife! She said if I didn't dress Sofia in the uniform, she would have me fired and blacklisted the moment the wedding was over! I was just following orders from the future lady of the house!"

Alexander slowly stood up. His towering, masculine frame cast a long shadow over the desk. He walked around the mahogany furniture, his polished leather shoes making slow, deliberate sounds against the floor. He stopped mere inches from the trembling housekeeper.

"You allowed a stranger to humiliate my blood," Alexander whispered, leaning down slightly so his cold eyes were level with hers. "You chose to fear a woman in a white dress over the man who signs your checks."

"Please, Mr. Vaughn, I’m so sorry! It was a mistake!" Martha begged, covering her face with her hands.

"It was treason," Alexander corrected smoothly. He did not raise his voice. He did not yell. The absolute, lethal calm of his delivery was infinitely more terrifying. He turned his head slightly, looking at his lead bodyguard.

"Pack her belongings," Alexander ordered. "She is banished from this city. If I ever see her face again, or if she ever speaks of my family, she will not be fired. She will be buried."

"Yes, Boss," the bodyguard nodded, grabbing Martha by the arm and dragging the weeping, hysterical woman out of the study.

The door clicked shut, leaving Alexander alone with his lead capo, who had been standing silently in the corner.

"Boss," the capo said hesitantly. "Veronica Hayes made it to her family's compound twenty minutes ago. Her father just called the secure line."

Alexander turned slowly. "And?"

"He says you have insulted their honor," the capo swallowed hard. "The Hayes syndicate considers the broken engagement an act of war."
