Chapter 10

The afternoon sun began its slow descent, though the cinematic, natural light remained sharp and vibrant, refusing to yield to the approaching dusk. Alexander stood by the window of his study for a long time, watching the heavy iron gates of his estate in the distance. He could see the subtle, coordinated movements of his bodyguards—men in professional dark suits taking up tactical positions behind the stone pillars and garden walls.
The estate was a fortress, and it was now officially locked down.
A soft, hesitant knock echoed from the heavy mahogany doors of the study.
"Enter," Alexander commanded, not turning away from the window.
The door creaked open, and the lead bodyguard stepped into the room, leading three-year-old Sofia by the hand. She had been changed out of the humiliating maid uniform and was now wearing a comfortable, bright pink sundress. Her fair, rosy face was clean, all traces of tears and black shoe polish scrubbed away.
"She asked to see you, Boss," the bodyguard said respectfully, releasing her hand before stepping back out into the hallway and closing the door.
Sofia stood in the massive, imposing room, her blue eyes looking up at the towering figure of her father.
Alexander’s cold, intimidating demeanor melted instantly. He turned away from the window, abandoning his vigil over the impending war. He crossed the room and dropped to one knee, bringing himself down to her eye level.
"Are you feeling better, piccola?" Alexander asked, his deep, raspy voice infinitely gentle as he reached out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"Yes, Daddy," Sofia nodded, her tiny hands reaching out to touch the dark, elegant tattoos on his forearms. She traced the lines with innocent curiosity. "Are the bad people gone?"
"They are gone," Alexander promised, his heart aching with a fierce, unbreakable protective love. "And they will never, ever come back."
"Vince said we have to stay inside tonight," Sofia noted, tilting her head. "Are we playing hide and seek?"
Alexander offered a small, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his cold, sharp eyes. "Yes, sweet girl. We are playing a game tonight. You are going to stay in the secure room with Clara, and you are going to watch all your favorite movies."
"Are you going to play too?" she asked innocently.
"Daddy has a different game to play tonight," Alexander murmured, standing up slowly. He took her small hand in his large, tattooed one. "Come. Let's get you upstairs."
He walked her out of the study and down the brightly lit corridors, handing her safely back to her nanny outside the reinforced nursery doors. He waited until the heavy steel deadbolts clicked shut from the inside, ensuring she was completely impenetrable.
As Alexander turned away from the nursery, his secure cell phone vibrated heavily in his pocket.
He pulled it out, staring at the glowing screen. It was an encrypted message from Vince.
Three SUVs bearing Hayes family plates just breached the southern county line. They are armed and heading for the estate.
Alexander locked the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. He reached beneath his unbuttoned dress shirt, his fingers brushing against the cold, heavy steel of the firearm secured in his shoulder holster.

The bright, cinematic colors of the hallway seemed to sharpen, waiting for the violence to erupt. Alexander Vaughn cracked his neck, the tattoos stretching over his defined jawline, and walked slowly toward the front doors.
The Hayes family had wanted a monster. And Alexander was finally ready to introduce them to the devil.
